Rice prices in An Giang remain stable.

In the final days of the year, amidst recurring floods, the rice market in the Mekong Delta in general, and An Giang in particular, has remained stable.

Operates smoothly

This stability not only has economic significance but also serves as a foundation of confidence for the people. In fact, rice prices in the province have not fluctuated significantly in recent days. From purchasing businesses and cooperatives to traders and retailers, all have reported abundant supply and stable prices. This is the result of a long-standing process of organizing production, stockpiling, and regulating the market, built up over many years.

Mr. Trinh Van Dut, Director of Tan Phu A1 Agricultural Cooperative in Tan An commune, commented: “This year's floods in Central Vietnam were not only large in scale but also prolonged, causing severe damage. Concerns about food shortages and price fluctuations are understandable. However, thanks to the Mekong Delta maintaining stable production, the rice market has not been disrupted. Cooperatives in the province proactively linked production with businesses from the beginning of the season, ensuring output for farmers. Therefore, the supply of commercial rice was not interrupted even when some localities in Central Vietnam were severely affected by natural disasters.”

From a state management perspective, Mr. Tran Thanh Hiep, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment, analyzed that although Central Vietnam was heavily affected by floods, it is not a key rice-producing region. Meanwhile, the Mekong Delta in general, and An Giang in particular, with its large rice production, plays a leading role in ensuring the supply for the whole country. The fact that the "national rice granary" was not directly impacted by the recent floods has created a solid foundation for the food supply-demand balance in recent days.

Mr. Nguyen Thong Nhat, Director of the Department of Industry and Trade, stated: “When people see that food supplies are distributed transparently, at the right time and in the right place, panic will not turn into extreme hoarding behavior. At that point, the market will maintain the necessary stability during this sensitive period.” According to Mr. Nhat, the stable price of rice in the province is not simply due to market “self-adjustment,” but rather the result of a synchronized system of reserves, circulation, and supply-demand regulation operating from the central to local levels. When unforeseen events occur, the State only needs to intervene appropriately and at the right time to keep the market from deviating from its course.

Upholding the spirit of brotherhood

Behind the numbers and operating mechanisms, the stability of the rice market at this time also stems from the very human and practical choices of the people of An Giang. That is, choosing to maintain prices and uphold the spirit of solidarity among compatriots during times of overwhelming hardship. At the markets of Long Xuyen, Tan Chau, and Chau Phu, the number of people buying rice has increased. Some are buying to stockpile for their families. Others are buying in bags to send to relatives in Central Vietnam or to relief organizations. What is commendable is that despite the increased demand, rice prices at many sales points remain stable.

Ms. Tran Thi Lan, a long-time rice vendor at Long Xuyen market, shared: “In recent days, people have been buying more, but I haven't raised prices. Central Vietnam is suffering, and I'm happy to still be able to do business. Maintaining prices is also a way to share with our compatriots.” Mr. Tran Van Tuan, a farmer from Chau Phong commune, confided: “As farmers, everyone hopes for higher rice prices, but with the devastating floods in Central Vietnam, where people have lost their homes, I can't bear to take a little extra profit.”

From rice vendors in the market to rice farmers in the fields, from export businesses to government agencies, each has a role and position, but they all share a common spirit of not profiting from the suffering of their compatriots, and not creating instability in the domestic market because of difficulties elsewhere. Looking more broadly, the fact that An Giang and the Mekong Delta rice market has maintained stability amidst the devastating floods in Central Vietnam is not just a story of supply and demand or price; it is vivid evidence of this region's pivotal role in national food security in the context of increasingly severe climate change and unpredictable natural disasters.

This is also the result of the policy of developing sustainable agriculture in harmony with nature, strengthening production linkages, improving storage capacity, regulating and managing the market, which An Giang has persistently implemented for many years. These efforts have not only yielded results in the fields and factories but have also spread into social life, contributing to maintaining stability and trust among the people.
