In a recent interview, Tony Leung Chiu Wai shared about the influence of filmmakers like Stephen Chow and Wong Kar-Wai on his career. In particular, the actor revealed how Wong Kar-Wai "tricked" him into playing a gay role in the movie "Happy Together" (Xuan quang xa tiet), co-starring with Leslie Cheung.
Was "tricked" into a homosexual role by Wong Kar-wai
Happy Together revolves around the love story of Lee Diu-hui (Tony Leung) and Ho Bao-wing (Leslie Cheung). They often break up and get back together, even though they hurt each other many times. To "rekindle" their cold relationship, Lee Diu-hui and Ho Bao-wing decide to leave Hong Kong and travel to Argentina.
In a foreign land, the couple continued to have conflicts and went their separate ways. The two then found ways to survive and overcome their loneliness. Le Dieu Huy was forced to stay in Argentina to work because he did not have enough money to return home. They were caught up in a cycle of breaking up and getting back together, loving each other intensely but not afraid to mentally torture each other.

Sharing about his role, Tony Leung revealed that he was very worried about playing a homosexual role: "I was worried about playing a homosexual role and Director Wong knew that. He gave me a fake script in which my father passed away in Buenos Aires and I had to go there to receive the body. There, I would discover that my father was gay and I had to find his lover. But when I arrived in Buenos Aires, Director Wong revealed that I was the gay character."
Talking more about the intimate scene with co-star Leslie Cheung, the actor said: "We filmed the intimate scene on the first day. Director Wong told me to change clothes as soon as I entered the set. Although it was hard to believe, I completed the scene. It took me three days to get over this experience. Wong Kar-wai also told me not to get lost in my thoughts about how I felt when kissing Leslie Cheung, because otherwise I wouldn't be able to complete the filming."

The film helped Wong Kar-wai win the Best Director award at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival.
Director Wong Kar-wai's work is a contemplation of the fragility of love, the inability to reconcile two strangers. The film is considered the best work of Hong Kong cinema of all time thanks to the sophistication of its content, acting and every frame. "Happy Together" helped Wong Kar-wai win the Best Director award at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival.
Stephen Chow invites to act
Before he started acting, Tony Leung shared that his first job was selling household appliances: "I was close friends with Stephen Chow at that time, and he often talked about acting and directing. He always pursued his dream of becoming a star, even when he was only 17 years old. I thought it was impossible, but he never gave up. Stephen Chow mentioned the TVB training school, and because I was so frustrated with selling refrigerators and air conditioners, I applied."
When sharing about the time when "the new lifestyle, emotional ties and fame hindered my prospects", Leung said: "There was a time when I had no motivation to work. I felt like I had lost my identity. I wanted to give up acting and cocoon in my "nest" all day rather than go out. But soon I realized I couldn't continue like that."

Stephen Chow was a close friend who encouraged Tony Leung to pursue an acting career.
In a 2000 interview, the Hong Kong actor said that acting is a real challenge and that each role has its own difficulties. "When I start filming a movie, I spend a lot of time adjusting myself to be able to immerse myself in the character I am playing. It is not a simple task. It is not easy for an actor to immerse himself in a movie role immediately and I am no exception. There are many factors that affect each of our moods."
To prepare for his roles, Tony Leung shared: " First, I have to understand my role clearly. I find out the habits of the character I am playing and learn from them to become more familiar with that role. For example, if that character often goes to bed late and wakes up late, I will do the same in real life. Subconsciously, I transform myself into this image. It is quite a painful process. During the filming period, I try not to contact my close friends and completely immerse myself in the film. The scenes are not real, but my emotions are."

Tony Leung Chiu-wai was named Best Actor at the Asian Film Awards.
Tony Leung Chiu Wai was recently named Best Actor at the Asian Film Awards. This title is just one of the countless acting awards the actor has won over his decades in the Hong Kong film industry.
Regarding his future and the possibility of stepping behind the camera, Tony Leung said that the actor has no plans to direct any films: "I'm not mature enough, and I don't know if I have the ability. I'm a quiet person and off screen I don't know how to express myself. I also don't know how to convey my own meanings."
