This morning (December 27), Ho Chi Minh City residents welcomed a new day with cool weather, weak sunshine, lowest temperature from 22-25 degrees Celsius, and fog appearing in many places.
According to the reporter's records, dense fog covered the central streets of Ho Chi Minh City. Most of the high-rise buildings were obscured by a layer of fog.

According to the Air Visual air monitoring application (belonging to IQAir, which owns a large amount of aggregated data on air quality and is headquartered in Switzerland), many areas in Ho Chi Minh City have air quality measurement points that are not good for health. |
Specifically, according to the Air Visual application, the concentration of PM 2.5 fine dust (PM2.5 fine dust is particulate matter floating in the air with a diameter of 2.5 micrometers or smaller) in Ho Chi Minh City at 9:30 a.m. on December 27 was 44 µg/m³ (the allowable level is about 5 µg/m³). |
"The concentration of fine dust PM 2.5 in Ho Chi Minh City is currently 8.8 times higher than the value according to WHO's annual air quality guidelines" - Air Visual informed. |

Informing reporters, Mr. Le Dinh Quyet, Head of Hydrometeorological Forecasting Department, Southern Hydrometeorological Station, said that the cause of fog in the last days of the year in Ho Chi Minh City is due to high humidity.
Specifically, according to Mr. Quyet, currently the continental cold high pressure (cold air) is weakening slowly, but there is another cold air wave strengthening, moving down, affecting the northern provinces of our country, the subtropical high pressure with an axis through the Central region is operating stably. The tropical low pressure (weakened from storm No. 10) operating in the sea northwest of Truong Sa archipelago is weakening into a low area and gradually dissipating. The Northeast wind in the sea east of the South is operating at medium intensity.
"The above weather conditions have caused the humidity in the air to be quite high. At 7am this morning, the eastern provinces were generally over 80%, Ho Chi Minh City 87.7%, Ta Lai Dong Nai 93%. The humidity is high, the northeast wind pushes the humidity from the sea to the mainland (the source of humidity from low-lying areas, where a lot of water vapor converges), creating a layer of fog near the ground," Mr. Quyet explained.
At nearly 10 o'clock, many places in Ho Chi Minh City were still covered in fog. |
In addition, Mr. Quyet also said that fog is a normal meteorological phenomenon, when there are sufficient conditions of high air humidity, low air temperature, light wind, fog is not classified as a type of dangerous weather, does not directly reflect the level of air quality pollution or not. To determine the level of pollution in the air, there must be measurement and analysis data from the competent authority (Environmental Monitoring Center, under the Department of Natural Resources and Environment).
"With this phenomenon, from now until New Year's Day and Lunar New Year, there will still be some days with fog similar to this morning," Mr. Quyet commented.
According to the Southern Hydrometeorological Station, the continental cold high pressure is currently operating stably after weakening. Around December 31, cold air will strengthen again in the north of our country. Above, the subtropical high pressure with an axis through the Central region continues to encroach on the west. East wind disturbances (causing rain) will form and affect the Southern region in the last days of December 2024.
