"Identifying portraits through works" - a collection of criticism and essays published by Thuan Hoa Publishing House at the end of 2024 - is a book published on the occasion of Ly Hoai Xuan's 70th birthday.
In the introduction “Identifying portraits through works” , according to the author “will help readers understand more about the life and creative thinking of each poet, writer, musician… As for Uncle Ho and Mother Suot, through the poems of poets, we honor and praise them”. The image of Uncle Ho in the poems of To Huu and Che Lan Vien is beautifully and movingly recalled by Ly Hoai Xuan: “Remembering the old man with bright eyes/Brown shirt and cloth bag, incredibly beautiful”, “Uncle Ho, leisurely lighting a cigarette/His forehead is immense, a part of the sky is serene”… (Morning in May), “Wherever Uncle Ho’s passionate words echo/Life is happy, Uncle Ho’s voice warms thousands of homes” (Following Uncle Ho’s footsteps), “Oh Uncle, your heart is so immense/Embracing the whole country, all human lives” (Oh Uncle!)…
If poet To Huu looked at Uncle Ho from many angles to write about him with sincere and simple feelings, Che Lan Vien had a subtle and profound way of exploiting him. The poet often delved into Uncle Ho's inner world to discover the beauty of his ideology, morality and humanity: "The country is extremely beautiful. But Uncle Ho had to leave/Let me be the waves under the ship that saw him off", "The image of the Party is embedded in the image of the country/The first moment of crying is the moment Uncle Ho smiled" (The person looking for the image of the country). Uncle Ho is the embodiment of beauty, each poet has a different way of looking at and feeling, but they all build the statue of Ho Chi Minh with sincere, profound and evocative poetic language.
In the article “There is a monument to Mother Suot in poetry” , Ly Hoai Xuan analyzed the image of Mother Suot in the poems of To Huu, Truc Chi, Nguyen Dinh Hong, Tran Nhat Thu, Huy Can, Le Duc Tho, Che Lan Vien, Xuan Hoang, Cam Lai, Van Loi… with authentic, vivid and touching language. The monument to Mother Suot enters the pages of poetry, enters people’s hearts with love and respect.
Writer Voltaire said: "Just like from the face, language, specific actions can recognize the nationality of a person...". In their creative career, each artist leaves their own distinct mark. That is explained by Ly Hoai Xuan through authors, such as: "Pham Quoc Ca, who always looks towards the open horizon", "Hanoi also has Bui Viet My". Especially with authors who have a predestined relationship with Quang Binh such as Xuan Quynh, Le Thi May, Ly Hoai Xuan has selected and analyzed their works with very unique marks. Introducing musician Pham Tuyen in his days in Quang Binh "living among the sounds of wind and sun" to sing with fishermen "The wind goes up, let our boat go out to sea/The vast sea, my heart is like the sea and sky..." (Clinging to the homeland's sea), the intense emotions from life have transformed into the exciting song "Dem Cha Lo". Or “Quang Binh in Tran Hoan’s songs” with famous songs: Ve Phong Nha, Son Nu Ca, Duong Rung, Ve Dong Le, Loi Co Gai Le Ninh, Nho Nhat Le, Duong Len Quy Dat… all have their own style with beautiful, pure, optimistic, and emotional melodies.
In addition to famous artists from all over the country who have deep affection for Quang Binh, Ly Hoai Xuan is especially interested in poets, writers, and musicians who are the children of the homeland, born and raised on the land of sunshine and wind, such as: "Quiet Hoang Thai Son", "Mai Van Hoan - Fate of poetry, fate of people", "Musician Hoang Song Huong and songs that go with the years", "Luc Bat poetry of a writer" (Hoang Binh Trong), "Nguyen Thi Cam Thach, the first writer of Quang Binh"...
Someone once said that writing a literary portrait requires the writer to raise himself to the same level as the person being written about. Only then can the article be comprehensive, understanding, and discover the bright spots that the author has painstakingly chosen, helping the work of art to penetrate deeply and take root in life. The same goes for Ly Hoai Xuan's "Identifying Portraits Through Works", he has spent time exploring and sympathizing in the language of analysis and commentary. Therefore, the book not only identifies the portraits of writers, poets, and musicians through their works, but readers can also vaguely see the portrait of a talented literary critic in each word.
