The dilapidated house, which seemed like it would collapse in just a heavy rain and wind, with nothing valuable inside except an old color TV, is the home of Lo Thi Don and her son, in Ten Luong village, Thanh An commune (Dien Bien district). In 2018, Lo Van Chung, Don's only son, listened to his friends' enticement and became addicted to drugs. Since then, the family's economy has been increasingly declining. Don's house is one of the poor households in the commune. In addition to 1,800m2 of land for growing rice and cassava, she had to borrow another 1,000m2 of land to grow corn. Occasionally, when someone in the village hires her, she does whatever she wants to earn extra income. Chung is young, but has a criminal record, is unmarried, unemployed, and even to have money to use drugs, Chung sold all of the family's belongings.
Mrs. Lo Thi Don confided: Since my son became addicted to drugs, the family's difficulties have become even more difficult. Every day, we have to worry about each meal and still don't have enough to eat. Now my son is like this and can't help the family at all. I can only encourage him to try to quit drugs and rebuild his life.
Major Nguyen Xuan Hung, Thanh An Commune Police, said: The commune is currently managing 102 drug addicts. The consequences of drugs are huge; many drug addicts who have no money steal, then sell their family's property for use. Families with drug addicts almost always have difficult and complicated lives; they have to work for hire, their children have no money to pay for school, causing their lives to be stuck in a cycle of poverty.
The family life of Mrs. Lo Thi Om, Chieng Tong village, Thanh Yen commune (Dien Bien district) has also been completely turned upside down by drugs. Her son, a drug addict, sold all the family's buffaloes, cows, and fields to buy drugs. Nearly 5 months ago, Mr. Lo Van Tien, Mrs. Om's son, was arrested by the police for illegal possession of drugs. Before that, Mr. Tien had served a 10-year prison sentence for illegal drug trafficking. He thought that after a mistake he would start his life over, but he still stuck to his old ways. He also tried to detox at home but failed. Mrs. Om is old, her husband died more than 10 years ago, the family has 2 children, the son is a drug addict, has fallen into prison; her daughter works far away, the economy is also difficult and cannot help her. Despite her old age and poor health, Mrs. Om still has to work for a living. When she is sick, no one takes care of her.
Lieutenant Colonel Pham Quang Truong, Chief of Thanh Yen Commune Police (Dien Bien District) said: Drug crimes have a great impact on the psychology, ideology as well as the socio-economic development of the locality, households are always in difficult conditions, often poor and near-poor households. The commune police have coordinated with departments, organizations of the commune, village, and hamlet to improve propaganda, dissemination and education of laws on drug crime prevention; focused forces to eliminate complicated drug-related spots; and established records to manage drug addicts.
Dien Bien district has many hot spots, prominent in the situation of illegal trading and use of drugs, especially in the communes: Na U, Thanh Yen, Muong Pon, Thanh An... The whole district currently has over 1,500 drug addicts with management records; nearly 740 subjects have just completed their prison sentences, and have not had their criminal records cleared. Drugs have been and are the cause of many consequences for families and society; destroying the happiness of many families. More than ever, every citizen needs to raise awareness of law enforcement, not to trade, store, or use drugs so that unfortunate consequences do not occur.
