"We are carrying out this mission purely for humanitarian reasons and to show solidarity with the Palestinian people," said Malaysian Defense Minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin.

He also stressed that this represents the nation's stance against this senseless war.

The injured were selected after being “carefully assessed” to ensure they were fit for the 19-hour flight, which included a stopover in Karachi, Pakistan. They were accompanied by 86 family members.

Gaza is currently facing severe food shortages after much of the population was displaced and much of its infrastructure was destroyed. Gaza health authorities say more than 40,000 people have died in the war.
