Hundreds of years ago, during the “Southern journey”, the typical values of Quang traditional culture “migrated” to the South and took root in this land. Now, in the reunion of Quang people far from home, it has become a space to resonate... Quang identity.
Bustling Quang festival
Wherever Quang people gather, there is often a festival. The festival is the bustling opening drumbeat, the drumbeat urging the feet, the “spring breeze blowing through the bamboo branches/ inviting everyone to listen to the folk song”. Or the festival is the strong, passionate and proud bare feet of the Co Tu village, the mysterious and captivating Apsara dancers.
( Mr. Nguyen Thanh Hong - Director of Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism )
And the Quang Nam people association brings to Saigon these days, also the pride of the country in the ho ba trao melodies of the white sand beach of Thang Binh. All are festival melodies that the Quang Nam people with their hearty and sincere voices call the identity of their homeland.
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Hong - Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism shared that this is the third time "Quang Nam Cultural Days in Ho Chi Minh City" is being organized, but perhaps this is the first time culture has been chosen as a connecting bridge.
Quang people will easily sit together, feel together in the melody of their homeland. Traditional art and culture with the origin of the land, has made it carry the mission of eliminating the barriers of time and space.
In Saigon, it feels like being in a village festival. In Saigon, the love for the countryside has not faded, because there is laughter in the bai choi mats, strong vibrations in the mountain dances, and a firm affirmation of national sovereignty in the ho ba trao songs.
This time, the folk art performance activities have been recognized as intangible cultural heritage of the world such as singing Bai Choi or being included in the heritage complex such as Apsara dance, or singing Ba Trao in the fishing festival of Quang Nam coastal fishermen, Tan Tung Da Da dance, drum and gong performance and pole-raising ceremony, Quang Nam cultural workers hope that Quang people far away from home will be proud of the traditional identities of their homeland...
Binh Minh boat singing and dancing club was chosen to represent the coastal community of Quang Nam to the South.
Mr. Truong Cong Hung - Head of the Department of Culture and Information of Thang Binh district said: "Coming to hat ba trao is also an opportunity for people to pass on experiences, reenact the way of working at sea from thousands of years ago, and at the same time is a spiritual support when people face nature, with the stormy sea.
Although I am from Quang Nam, I think there will be many people far away from home who cannot fully understand the hidden values of the art form of Ba Trao. This time, we chose a special excerpt of Ho Ba Trao in the fishing festival to partly introduce this unique identity to people everywhere" - Mr. Hung shared.
The Bai Choi game booth is indispensable for every festival of Quang people. Ms. Vo Thi Thu May - Head of the Provincial Opera Troupe said that organizing the Bai Choi festival this time is different from the previous ones.
“It’s like we bring gifts from our hometown to our relatives. The artists are eagerly waiting for the day to participate in the program “Countrymen Cultural Days in Ho Chi Minh City”. The group’s wish is to connect and spread the traditional art of Bai Choi of Quang Nam to many generations of Quang people in the South” - Ms. May shared.
Memory space
Mr. Mai Phuc - Chairman of the Quang Nam Association in Ho Chi Minh City said that the idea of creating a space filled with memories of the homeland was put forward by the Executive Committee of the Quang Nam Association. What are memories if not the songs and chants of the village festivals in Quang Nam?
That is why every year, the Quang Nam compatriots in the South always have a warm and meaningful reunion day, organized by the Association of Compatriots. Accompanying the Quang people far from home for more than 20 years in the South, the Association of Compatriots has organized many meetings with their compatriots, but it was not until March 2013 that a truly large-scale meeting was held at Dam Sen Cultural Park, attracting thousands of people far from home to participate.
(Mr. Mai Phuc - Chairman of the Quang Nam Association in Ho Chi Minh City)
It was also from this large-scale and impressive meeting that the Quang Nam compatriot activities really spread. The second time in 2016 - Quang Nam Compatriot Cultural Festival attracted more than 100,000 Quang people far from home and people from Ho Chi Minh City to participate.
“Initially, we planned to organize it once every 3 years, but in 2019 and 2021, due to some reasons, especially the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the event could not take place as planned. Up to this point, the third time of organization, “Quang Nam Cultural Days in Ho Chi Minh City” is prepared to become a cozy and friendly space for Quang people far from home.
We, the Executive Committee members, discussed the ideas for the program, then we went back to work with our home province to mobilize participation from the people in our hometown.
This is also special when the identity of Quang is expressed by the Quang people themselves, from traditional arts, booths promoting specialties to local potential to attract investment.
In Ho Chi Minh City, we mobilize businesses of Quang people living far from home and artists of Quang origin to participate in activities. Therefore, the most important thing of “Quang Nam Cultural Days in Ho Chi Minh City” is to create connections between Quang people everywhere…” - Mr. Mai Phuc shared.
A deep affection will be further nurtured by traditional melodies and tunes...
