Wasting money on burning genital warts.

VnExpressVnExpress15/08/2023

In Hanoi , a 20-year-old man went for a circumcision, but medical staff discovered many tiny bumps on his genitals and advised him to pay extra to have them removed by cauterization.

The patient stated that after the circumcision and minor surgery, the doctor discovered a wart on his genitals, which could lead to serious consequences if left untreated, and advised immediate cauterization. Fearing the wart would cause long-term problems, the man agreed to pay for the surgery. The total cost for the circumcision, wart cauterization, and medication was 23 million VND, instead of the 5 million VND initially advised.

On August 14th, Dr. Nguyen Tuan Dat, Deputy Head of the Department of Andrology at Military Central Hospital 108, stated that the tiny bumps are genital warts, also known as penile pearly papules, and are benign. When penile pearly papules are accurately diagnosed, no treatment is necessary. However, many cases are "overemphasized," causing patients to worry and spend millions of dong on treatment.

To date, the cause of penile pearly papules remains unclear, but they most commonly appear between the ages of 20 and 40. Over time, the papules may fade. In cases where penile pearly papules are large, doctors may consider laser treatment or surgical removal.

"Many patients don't understand this condition and waste money on unnecessary surgery. Furthermore, many facilities lack professional ethics, taking advantage of patients' lack of knowledge to prescribe and advise treatments that lead to unnecessary expenses," said Dr. Dat.

Mr. Dat assessed that there are currently many reputable and high-quality men's health clinics, but there are also many operating illegally without licenses, despite advertising to attract patients even though they do not meet the legal requirements. Most of these facilities advertise unusually low prices, then problems arise during treatment and they demand additional money from patients.

"We once treated a patient who spent up to 32 million VND on a circumcision but still experienced complications, while the price at a reputable facility is only a few million VND," Dr. Dat said.

A 24-year-old male, four hours after undergoing a circumcision at a private medical facility, was admitted to the emergency room due to bleeding from the surgical wound, swelling, bruising, and risk of necrosis of the genitals. At Military Central Hospital 108, the patient was diagnosed with post-circumcision bleeding, significant hematoma causing bruising and edema of the penis. The patient subsequently underwent skin resection, wound cleaning, and reconstructive surgery.

"Circumcision is a procedure that requires certain conditions, such as a clean and sterile operating room, and a professionally trained surgeon," Dr. Dat said, adding that during the circumcision and post-operative period, if the correct procedures and hygiene standards are not followed, men are very susceptible to complications.

Doctors advise patients to research and choose reputable facilities to avoid falling into the "cheap price trap." Reputable medical facilities must have operating licenses, complete medical equipment, skilled doctors, and accurate communication, without exaggerating or exploiting customer psychology for profit.

"Clinics must provide full counseling about the risks before, during, and after minor surgery, and also commit to the costs, avoiding any signs of 'inflating' or extorting money from patients," said Dr. Dat.
