On the days before Tet, visiting Van Lang commune, Ha Hoa district, on the rice fields, you can see the cool green of young rice seedlings and rows of vegetables ready for harvest. Looking at the scene before your eyes, if you have not been here, it is difficult to imagine that just a few months ago, this place was heavily affected by storm No. 3 - Yagi.
Going back in time to September 2024, due to the impact of storm No. 3, there was very heavy rain in Ha Hoa district; water levels in rivers rose rapidly, affecting people's lives and property, and infrastructure of transportation, irrigation, education, health care, etc.
The storm killed two people, injured one, damaged 69 houses, flooded 4,311 households, caused landslides and forced emergency evacuation. Heavy damage was caused to agricultural production and infrastructure. Of which, over 1,709 hectares of crops, over 953 hectares of rice and 458 hectares of vegetables were damaged. The total estimated damage in the district was 379 billion VND. |
In Van Lang commune, after the merger, the whole commune had 5 areas, of which areas 1 and 3 along the outside of the Red River dike suffered heavy damage due to rising river water levels. For the areas inside the dike, due to the impact of prolonged heavy rain, the water level outside was close to the dike surface, so it could not drain, leading to dozens of hectares of green squash that were ready to bear fruit being flooded and dying.
Comrade Truong Ba Xuan - Vice Chairman of Van Lang Commune People's Committee said: Storm Yagi is the storm that caused the highest river water level in Van Lang Commune since 2010. The area of damaged crops in the whole commune is over 85 hectares. In addition, there is damage to fruit trees, aquaculture, and livestock with a total support cost of over 1.2 billion VND.
To quickly overcome the consequences of storms and floods, based on the directives of the Provincial People's Committee and the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the People's Committee of Ha Hoa district promptly issued directives to overcome production after natural disasters, provided guidance on the structure of the winter crop calendar and measures to prevent and control diseases on crops and livestock, and applied technology in production to limit damage in production.
Farmers in communes in Ha Hoa district sow and plant according to the crop schedule to ensure the Chiem-Spring crop production plan.
Members of the District Agricultural Production Steering Committee directly went to the grassroots to inspect and urge communes and towns to speed up the harvest of summer-autumn rice and carry out the 2024 winter-spring crop production. Actively direct and promptly drain water from flooded areas; deploy plant protection plans, propagate and transfer new science and technology to apply in production.
Deploy instructions for farmers to urgently carry out embankment work on low-lying land and plowing for areas not planted in the winter crop. Guide communes to strengthen soil improvement to restore production for banana areas after natural disasters. Direct units to best prepare conditions for production in the 2024-2025 winter-spring crop such as: Seeds, fertilizers, irrigation work; continue to guide communes and towns to sign contracts to buy slow-release NPK fertilizer to promptly serve production in the direction of intensive investment right from the beginning of the crop.
The working atmosphere in the fields is very urgent even though it is the days before Tet.
For Van Lang commune, a locality heavily affected by the storm, however, immediately after the storm passed, local authorities recommended that people plant sweet corn, cucumbers, cabbage, tomatoes... to take advantage of the remaining fertilizer in the soil. From there, they quickly planted a new crop of vegetables in time to harvest before Tet.
Ms. Hoang Hong Ngoc - Zone 2, Van Lang Commune shared: When storm No. 3 passed, all 7 sao of squash of my family were flooded and ruined. Immediately after the water receded, with the guidance of local authorities, my family quickly prepared the land to plant cabbage and tomatoes. Both of these crops were harvested before Tet and can be harvested until the end of February. My family earned a total of more than 40 million VND from 2 sao of tomatoes and 1,000 cabbage plants.
Green has returned to Van Lang commune, Ha Hoa district - the place that was heavily affected by storm No. 3 (Yagi).
In the coming time, implementing the production of the Chiem Xuan crop - the main crop with high yield potential and determining the growth rate of the agricultural sector in 2025, Ha Hoa district has implemented policies to encourage the development of high-tech agricultural models, organic agriculture; gradually building brands for the district's key products with quality to help people expand the area and consume products. Expanding the area of large-scale model fields, concentrated planting; implementing demonstration models of new varieties, scientific and technical advances in production, as a basis for replication, reducing investment costs in production, increasing profits for farmers.
Develop a production plan for the Chiem Xuan crop in conjunction with the production plans for other crops in the year to create a reasonable crop rotation chain, with the previous crop creating conditions for production in the next crop. Prepare enough seeds to meet production needs and reserve to respond to natural disasters; promptly handle unfavorable situations caused by weather and epidemics, ensuring production safety. Establish and manage growing area codes for key crops (grapefruit, tea, bananas, vegetables, high-quality rice) to monitor and control production, control quality, and trace the origin of crop products for domestic consumption and export.
Comrade Ha Duc Cuong - Head of the District Department of Agriculture and Rural Development informed: In the 2025 Chiem Xuan crop, Ha Hoa district strives to have over 5,000 hectares of perennial crop land, of which, Chiem Xuan rice has a total area of 3,950 hectares, hybrid rice 1,900 hectares; high-quality rice 1,956 hectares; pure rice 94 hectares. For corn, peanuts, vegetables, beans and other crops, actively introduce hybrid corn varieties, transgenic corn, peanuts, new soybean varieties into cultivation to increase economic efficiency per unit of cultivated area.
Hopefully in the coming time, with the strong direction of the authorities at all levels, functional sectors and the coordination and response of the majority of people, all the fields and rice fields in Ha Hoa district will be filled with the green of trees, crops, and the green of bountiful harvests.
