Despite the Blues' dismal campaign this season, Argentine coach Mauricio Pochettino has decided to join Chelsea as head coach from the 2023-2024 season.
Pochettino signed a three-year contract with the London club's leadership on the afternoon of May 28, just hours before Chelsea took to the field in the final round against Newcastle to end the season in which the team will certainly finish outside the Top 10.
Mauricio Pochettino has signed a three-year contract with Chelsea
The 51-year-old Argentine has not worked directly with any team since being sacked by Paris Saint-Germain at the end of last season. Returning to London after nearly four years away, Pochettino has been tasked with reviving a Chelsea side that is facing serious problems both on and off the pitch.
Interim coach Frank Lampard will leave Chelsea after the season
Pochettino is expected to meet with interim coach Frank Lampard at Stamford Bridge to grasp all the problems the team is facing. He will also have conversations with Chelsea's executive team to seek positive cooperation in the next 3 years with the goal of quickly bringing "The Blues" back on track, regaining their position as a member of the "Big Six" leading the Premier League as in the past.
Chelsea face many serious problems
Unable to improve their rankings after two coaches Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter were fired and legend Frank Lampard was brought in as interim coach, Chelsea fell to the bottom half of the Premier League table for the first time in many years.
Chelsea's new owners have spent hundreds of millions of pounds on the transfer market, but the results have been inversely proportional to the amount of investment.
Enzo Fernandez is one of the expensive contracts of "The Blues"
According to the plan initially presented with Chelsea's sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley, Pochettino decided to strengthen the squad by recruiting at least one striker, one central midfielder and one goalkeeper.
In addition to streamlining Chelsea's bloated and over-staffed squad, Pochettino also has to improve many of the team's standards.
Lautaro Martinez is an effective striker in Pochettino's eyes
It is no surprise that Pochettino has prioritized contacting his compatriots who won the World Cup last year. The hottest names right now, such as goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez (Aston Villa), midfielder Alexis Mac Allister (Brighton) and striker Lautaro Martinez (Inter Milan), will be put on the negotiating table first.
Chelsea have signed striker Christopher Nkunku for £63m from RB Leipzig but are still keen on Napoli's Victor Osimhen, Serie A's top scorer this season.
With Pochettino, Chelsea dreams of a return
Declan Rice is also a name that has been mentioned quite a lot but Chelsea will face competition from Arsenal to sign the England midfielder who plays for West Ham.
Among the stars whose contracts with Chelsea are about to expire, coach Pochettino wants to keep Mason Mount. He will also discuss specifically the return of Romelu Lukaku, the striker who is currently on loan at Inter Milan.
