On Tuesday, July 8, TUI Airways flight BY49 took off from Cancún, Mexico, headed to London Gatwick Airport but according to aviation website Flightradar24, the flight was diverted to Bangor International Airport in Maine, USA.
Before diverting, the flight captain announced that two passengers were smoking in the restroom, adding that if the situation continued, he would have to land at another airport, according to AP.

However, after 3 hours and 30 minutes, the captain announced to the passengers that the flight would be diverted to Maine. The plane was supposed to land at 9:30 p.m. local time, and the two smoking passengers were removed from the flight.
British passenger Terry Lawrance, 66, said people then sat on the plane for another five hours, even taxiing for take-off. However, due to limited working hours, the original crew were unable to continue operating the flight back to London.
TUI Airlines confirmed that the plane was diverted for safety reasons after some passengers on board became "disruptive".
The airline added that an alternative flight was immediately arranged, but due to US immigration laws, passengers were unable to leave the terminal while waiting and had to stay temporarily at a US airbase at the airport, while their luggage remained on the plane.
Footage taken by passenger Lawrence shows passengers staying in the base's room in "deplorable" conditions for 12 hours while the airline re-arranges a new crew before the flight takes off.
The flight took off again on Wednesday, July 9 and landed safely afterwards. In total, passengers had to wait 17 hours to board the flight back to the UK.
