Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Ha, an employee of Meli Green Farm, said that the cooperative has been operating since 2022. This is a standard greenhouse area, located right at the Welcome Gate area, Buon Chuoi village, Me Linh commune, Lam Ha district. Instead of coffee hills, the cooperative has built a series of standard greenhouses, specializing in growing lettuce according to the high-tech agricultural model, recirculating hydroponics.
“The cooperative mainly grows lettuce varieties such as lo lo and glass. With an area of 6 sao of greenhouse, our cooperative built four hydroponic houses, each house is equipped with a recirculating hydroponic system with a fully automatic controller. In fact, the investment level for recirculating hydroponics can be considered high. However, the results are very positive,” Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Ha assessed and added that the market demand for lettuce is very high. Because this is a vegetable that consumers eat raw, make salads in daily meals, so the cultivation of lettuce requires being as clean as possible.
At Meli Green Farm, lettuce is grown entirely in a hydroponic environment. While many farms use seeds imported from seed farms, at the cooperative, seeds are imported from seeds and produced right on the farm. In small plastic boxes, the cooperative's workers stuff specialized substrates, place seeds, incubate and germinate them in optimal conditions. After two weeks, when the seeds germinate and reach the required height, the boxes are placed in pre-drilled holes in the hydroponic system. The amount of water, fertilizer, flow rate, etc. are all recorded and calculated by the machine system, and a daily care process is planned. After that, the automatic system will turn on the switch, helping water and nutrients circulate in the pipe system, providing enough nutrients for the plants. Excess water is collected in the tank, continuing to return in a new cycle, without being wasted.
That is why Meli Green Farm's lettuce and glass plants grow very quickly. When harvesting, workers only need to gently lift each plant out of the box, wrap the corners, and bring it to the processing area. As for the plastic boxes, they continue to be cleaned and reused for the next crop. "Growing hydroponic lettuce is relatively easy because lettuce is essentially a very easy-to-grow plant, has few pests and diseases, and has a short growth period. After placing the plastic boxes in the water pipes, we can harvest them after only 30 days," said Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Ha. Currently, Meli Green Farm's products are supplied to a number of supermarkets and clean vegetable stores in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Therefore, vegetables are harvested daily. After harvesting, the roots need to be wrapped, old and yellow leaves need to be trimmed, and they need to be placed in baskets. Ms. Thu Ha also assessed that to ensure that the vegetables reach consumers with the greenest and sweetest taste, Meli Green Farm always ensures the correct post-harvest processing process, and transports them by refrigerated truck, ensuring that when they reach the store, the vegetables still retain their firmness, crispness, and sweetness.
Not only building a hydroponic system to grow vegetables, Meli Green Farm is also one of the farms that cares about the health of workers. Instead of letting workers transport and carry fertilizers and vegetables themselves, Meli Green Farm built a transportation system that runs along the greenhouses. When transportation is needed, the pulley system will gently lift heavy objects up as well as bring vegetable boxes down to the processing area very quickly and without labor. Ms. Dinh Thi Nu, a young worker of Meli Green Farm, said that with the transportation system, workers' labor is greatly reduced, mainly just harvesting and operating the hydroponic system. The cooperative requires workers to understand the working process, ensuring hygiene and safety in farming as well as in processing.
Ms. Tran Thi Khanh Hoa - President of the Farmers' Association of Me Linh Commune said that Meli Green Farm is an agricultural cooperative located in the commune. Currently, the greenhouse system as well as the hydroponic vegetable cultivation process of Meli Green Farm are considered to be an advanced production model, outstanding high-tech agriculture of Me Linh Commune. At the same time, to enhance reputation and build a brand, Meli Green Farm Cooperative is registering to build OCOP products, standardize production processes, and bring the Meli Green Farm vegetable brand to consumers.
