Messi and Inter Miami made history at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, the first time a team from the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Football has defeated a European representative in the tournament. A 2-1 victory over Porto helped David Beckham's team and Palmeiras (Brazil) lead with four points after two rounds.

With the match tied at 1-1, Messi scored a classy free kick in the 54th minute, sealing the win for Inter Miami. This was Messi's 50th goal for Inter Miami, earning him the Man of the Match award.
With this goal, the Argentine striker now has 25 goals from FIFA tournaments, leading all-time in both men's and women's football.
According to official statistics from FIFA, Messi has scored 25 goals in major international tournaments over the past 20 years, spanning 10 different tournaments. This achievement is a clear testament to his outstanding class and extraordinary stability at the top of world football.
Messi's first goal in a FIFA tournament was at the 2006 World Cup in Germany, when he was just 18 years old. Since then, the player born in 1987 has regularly scored in almost every major tournament he has participated in, affirming his position as one of the greatest legends in football history.

Messi has also set a new record, becoming the first player in football history to have a hand in 1,250 goals at professional level - including both goals and assists.
This is an unprecedented milestone in world football. With the free kick goal against Porto, Messi increased his total goals to 866 and assists to 384.
This goal also marked the 68th time Messi has scored from a free kick, an impressive number that brings him closer to legendary milestones. The superstar born in 1987 is now only 2 goals behind the record of 70 free kicks of "King of Football" Pele and 9 goals behind the all-time record of 77 goals of free kick specialist Juninho Pernambucano.
For Inter Miami, Messi officially became the player with the most total goal contributions for this team with 44 times (24 goals and 20 assists). This achievement surpassed the record of 43 times of his former teammate in the Argentine national team, Gonzalo Higuain.
Remarkably, Messi only needed 29 MLS matches to reach this milestone, far surpassing Higuain, who needed 67 matches to have 43 goal contributions.

In the final match of the group stage, coach Javier Mascherano and his team only need a draw against Palmeiras to qualify for the round of 16. Even if Inter Miami loses to the Brazilian representative, they still have a chance to continue if Porto does not lose to Al Ahly in the match at the same time.
This gives Messi and his teammates many advantages before the decisive match, although the task is still full of challenges.
