Messi and James Rodriguez argued during the match.

The incident happened after the referee showed a straight red card to Enzo Fernandez in the second half, when the Argentine midfielder made a dangerous high tackle on the Colombian player. Messi and Rodriguez had a verbal exchange about Fernandez's foul.

According to AS , the relationship between Messi and Rodriguez has not been good before. A few months ago, Rodriguez brought up the story of Colombia losing the 2024 Copa América final because of the referee's bias towards Argentina.

Specifically, the former Real Madrid star said after the final: "The referee had a big influence. He didn't give us penalties. We were fouled and I'm sure the team should have had a penalty. We started the game in good form but they scored just three minutes before the penalty. I'm not saying they didn't deserve to win, but there were a lot of things that affected us."

Back in the recent match, neither Messi nor Rodriguez scored. Fernandez's red card forced Argentina to play with one less man, but the home team still managed to equalize through Thiago Almada.

With the final result of 1-1 draw, Argentina maintained the top position in the group after the 2026 World Cup qualifiers with 35 points. Meanwhile, Colombia ranked 6th with 22 points.

Messi dribbles the ball past teammate Busquets Lionel Messi had a solo performance that surprised even his teammates in Inter Miami's 5-1 win over Columbus Crew on June 1.
