Two Barca legends, Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez, have just officially joined hands to create the Deportivo LSM Club based in Uruguay.
"Deportivo LS has been my family's dream since 2018. Since then, we have grown strongly, now having more than 3,000 members. I want to contribute to Uruguayan football - where I grew up and always loved - by creating conditions and opportunities for young players to develop" - Suarez shared on Instagram late on May 27.
The club, formerly known as Deportivo LS, will be renamed Deportivo LSM and begin competing professionally in the Uruguayan Fourth Division (Division D), part of the Uruguayan Football Federation (AUF) tournament system.
Alongside Suarez in the team announcement video , Messi expressed his pride in joining his close friend in this project. Immediately after the announcement, the official Instagram account of Deportivo LSM was launched and attracted more than 40,000 followers in two hours, more than 279,000 followers after 12 hours.
Messi, Suarez join forces to launch a club in Uruguay
"We have shared a lot of things with each other since we were young. Now we have the opportunity to continue doing that in a long-term project where we can convey the football philosophy that we both believe in," Messi said.
Deportivo LSM was formed in 2018, when the Suarez family opened an eight-hectare sports complex in Ciudad de la Costa, a suburb of the capital Montevideo. The complex includes an artificial turf pitch with a capacity of 1,400 spectators, along with other training grounds and activities for thousands of members.
Although Messi's specific role in the project has not been announced, some sources have indicated that the Argentine superstar is a strategic partner of the club. Former player Alvaro Recoba - who played for Uruguay and Inter Milan - is said to be taking on the role of head coach.
Currently, both Messi and Suarez are playing for Inter Miami in the US Major League Soccer - MLS and have a match against Montreal at 6:30 on May 29.
