Through his production company 525 Rosario, the Argentine superstar will host the Messi Cup, a tournament for the world's top youth teams. The event is scheduled to take place from December 9 to 14 in South Florida, with the final being held at Chase - the home of Inter Miami.
This U16 tournament quickly attracted attention when it gathered many of the world's top clubs from Europe including Barcelona, Man City, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Atletico Madrid.
In addition, the South American region also participated with representatives from River Plate, Newell's Old Boys (Messi's childhood club), and Inter Miami.
Notably, the eight teams will be divided into two groups, playing a round-robin before entering the play-off rounds.
Speaking on the announcement day (October 14), Messi could not hide his excitement: "I am very happy to finally be able to share this. This is not just about the matches, we also have many other exciting activities. This tournament is for the future generation of football. Hope you will enjoy the Messi Cup."
According to a statement from 525 Rosario, the Messi Cup aims to go beyond a mere sports tournament. It is envisioned as a series of live events and a digital platform that combines sports, culture and innovation.
Mr. Tim Pastore - CEO of 525 Rosario - emphasized: "Messi Cup is the meeting point between today's football and the stars of tomorrow. This is an opportunity to honor talent, culture and community spirit, creating a legacy beyond the field."
ESPN commented: "Lionel Messi is continuing his legacy - this time not on the pitch, but as an organizer."
The founding of the Messi Cup shows that the 38-year-old superstar's vision is not only limited to competition, but also extends to the role of shaping the future of the king sport, by creating a world-class playground to nurture the next generation of talent.
