With TikTok shut down, rival platforms, especially Meta, will benefit greatly. According to estimates, when TikTok is removed from app stores, Meta could earn up to $3.38 billion in advertising revenue.
Meta benefits from TikTok's removal from the US
The ban on TikTok in the US took effect on January 19 (local time), one day before Donald Trump was inaugurated as US president. The decision stems from a bill passed last year to "protect US national security from threats posed by applications controlled by foreign adversaries". TikTok is now removed from the Google Play Store and App Store, resulting in a halt in the rollout of updates to US users.
TikTok generated $12.34 billion in U.S. ad revenue in 2024, according to a report from eMarketer. The ban could see the company lose 50% to 70% of that revenue, with $6.17 billion to $8.64 billion in ads looking for new platforms. Analysts predict Meta could see ad revenue increase by $2.46 billion to $3.38 billion, while boosting its earnings per share by as much as 9%. YouTube and Snapchat would also benefit from the situation.
Amid concerns about the ban, many TikTok users in the US are switching to another Chinese social media app, RedNote. At the same time, the number of people learning Mandarin on the Duolingo app has also increased by 216%.
There is some good news for TikTok loyalists, though. While the Supreme Court upheld the ban, President-elect Donald Trump recently said he is “considering” signing an executive order shortly after taking office that would suspend enforcement of the law for 60 to 90 days. If that happens and the future goes in TikTok’s favor, social networks like Meta will certainly be “not happy.”
