Thai jackfruit price drops to record low, consumers rush to close orders

Thai jackfruit has landed in Hanoi at a "floor-crashing" price, starting from only 10,000 VND/kg, causing consumers to rush to close orders, opening up an unprecedented "online rescue" campaign.

Thai jackfruit prices at the garden "falling rapidly"

In recent days, consumers in Hanoi have witnessed a wave of "rescuing Thai jackfruit" on e-commerce platforms, social networks and even at traditional markets. Once a fruit positioned in the mid-range segment with prices ranging from 50,000 to 70,000 VND/kg, Thai jackfruit is now being sold everywhere for only 20,000 to 45,000 VND/kg in inner-city areas, with some places even "clearing warehouses" for only 15,000 VND/kg when buying whole fruits.

Ms. Doan Thi Hoa (Thanh Xuan district, Hanoi), an online fruit seller, said: “I have never seen Thai jackfruit as cheap as this year. The jackfruit is beautiful, with even yellow segments, ripe, fragrant and sweet, the wholesale price is only 10,000 - 15,000 VND/kg. I imported 300 kg, and it was sold out in less than an afternoon after posting.”

At some supermarkets and clean food stores in Hanoi, the price of Thai jackfruit has also begun to decrease sharply. While last month, high-quality peeled jackfruit cost up to 85,000 - 100,000 VND/kg, now many places have reduced it to 49,000 - 59,000 VND/kg.

A representative of the TPH clean food system shared: “Because the amount of goods shipped from the West to the North is too large, we also adjusted prices to compete with the online market. People are preferring to buy retail online, so stores must be more flexible.”

At jackfruit farms in Tien Giang, Ben Tre , Hau Giang..., prices fluctuate only from 1,000 to 4,000 VND/kg - a record low price in recent years.

In Phu Nhuan commune (Cai Lay, Tien Giang ), talking to a reporter from Cong Thuong Newspaper, Mr. Tran Duc Nam, a household owning more than 400 Thai jackfruit trees, said in frustration: “I have never seen jackfruit prices drop to such a low level. There are days when the warehouse only collects at 1,000 VND/kg, transporting a ton to sell but not getting even a million VND. At this level, our people are losing a lot of money. The cost of fertilizer, labor, and pesticides has all increased this year, but selling jackfruit is only enough to cover... gasoline costs.”

Explaining the reason for the plummeting jackfruit prices, traders said that it is currently the peak harvest season in the entire Southwest region. Supply has increased dramatically but output is congested. “Every year, jackfruit is mainly exported to China through unofficial channels, but this year, they have tightened import standards, from design, size to pesticide residue. Goods that do not meet standards are being returned, so traders are now cautious when buying, only choosing good quality goods,” said Mr. Tran Duc Nam.

Unable to export, goods piled up in warehouses, many traders were forced to reduce purchasing prices. In addition, summer is also the time when many other fruits such as lychee, mango, watermelon, etc. are dumped into the domestic market, making the ability to consume jackfruit even more limited. "In the past few days, jackfruit trucks have been parked along the side of the national highway, some trucks have been left for a long time without being sold and had to be dumped. It's so pitiful," said Mr. Tran Duc Nam.

Racing to close deals, selling cheaply to "rescue"

While the West is flooded with jackfruit with no outlet, in Hanoi, the movement to “rescue Thai jackfruit” is becoming a real race between online retailers, freelance shippers and inner-city consumer groups. No need for premises or advertising, just a phone, a social media account and a few photos of “golden, sweet jackfruit”, hundreds of orders are closed every day.

In the Nguyen Xien area (Thanh Xuan), Ms. Tran Thi Minh, a freelance fruit seller, said: “The goods arrive at 6am and are sold out by 11am. I sell for 30,000 VND/kg if you buy whole fruit, and 35,000 VND/kg if you cut it. If you buy more than 10kg, you get an extra 1kg, free shipping within a 5km radius.” She shared that on a peak day, she can sell up to 20kg of jackfruit in just the morning.

On the sidewalk fruit stalls along Lang, Pham Ngoc Thach, Nguyen Van Cu streets..., Thai jackfruit is sold in abundance, priced at only 10,000 - 12,000 VND/kg. Large fruits with beautiful segments are more expensive, but still do not exceed 18,000 VND/kg. Compared to the price at the beginning of May (about 35,000 - 40,000 VND/kg of fresh whole jackfruit), the current price has decreased by more than 60%.

The market also has "jackfruit combo" to stimulate demand: 5kg of peeled jackfruit + 1 box of homemade yogurt for 75,000 VND; or "jackfruit for 10k/kg, buy 5kg get 1kg free, free knife". The flexibility and creativity of sellers make Thai jackfruit a "hot" item, no less than mango or watermelon to cool down in the summer.

Ms. Hoang Thu Trang, an office worker in My Dinh, said: “My company has someone deliver jackfruit to my place every week. The sisters in the office invite each other to buy 20-30kg, dividing a few boxes among themselves. The jackfruit is peeled, vacuum-sealed, and stored in the refrigerator for later consumption. It is convenient and delicious. Buying dozens of kilos for less than 200,000 VND is such a bargain.”

On online market groups such as “HH Linh Dam Resident Market”, “Hanoi Green Market”, “Smart Housewives”, posts selling Thai jackfruit with titles such as “Homegrown jackfruit, Western standard”, “Shocking clearance sale to help people” attracted hundreds of comments and “closed orders” in just a few minutes. Many orders were up to 20 - 30kg, with requests for pre-cut, vacuum-packed or seeded.

Ms. Trinh Quynh Anh (Cau Giay District), a regular customer who orders agricultural products from the West, shared: “I bought 10kg of Thai jackfruit for only 120,000 VND, as cheap as vegetables. The jackfruit is delicious, fragrant, and not fibrous. In the summer, having jackfruit to eat, make yogurt, squeeze juice, dry... is very convenient.”

The phenomenon of "racing to close orders and sell Thai jackfruit cheaply" in Hanoi is not only a spontaneous market reaction, but also reflects a new trend in agricultural product consumption: Fast, cheap, online community sharing.

In previous years, the area of Thai jackfruit cultivation increased rapidly due to the movement of crop conversion as well as the economic value that this crop brought. However, after durian was officially exported, farmers increased the cultivation of durian, and Thai jackfruit could no longer maintain its position.
