Chayote cultivation model in Hun village.

Upon arriving at the beginning of Hun village, one is immediately greeted by the lush green of chayote vines covering the fields. In their spacious garden of over 2,000 square meters, Ms. Tong Thi Hoa's family is harvesting chayote fruits hanging from sturdy steel trellises. Ms. Hoa shared: "Our family invested 50 million VND to build the trellises and an automatic irrigation system. Each year we harvest about 25 tons of chayote, and after deducting expenses, we earn a profit of over 200 million VND."

Meanwhile, the family of Mr. Tong Van Tien, one of the households with the largest chayote cultivation area in the village, has 5,000 m². Mr. Tien enthusiastically said: "Chayote is easy to grow, requires little care, and provides a continuous harvest. Every day, my family harvests 100-300 kg, and the selling price is stable at 11-12 thousand VND/kg. Compared to other crops, growing chayote is much more economically efficient."

According to chayote growers in Hun village, chayote cultivation has low initial investment costs and a harvesting period lasting up to 9 months (from September to May of the following year). The entire production process follows organic methods, primarily using well-rotted manure as fertilizer, manual weeding or using small tillers, and an irrigation system drawing water from mountain streams. Thanks to this, the chayote here maintains its sweet and refreshing quality, making it popular with consumers. Currently, chayote from Hun village is purchased directly from the farms by traders or sold by households at the night market in Chieng Coi ward.

Mr. Tong Van Yen, Deputy Secretary of the Party branch and Head of Hun village, shared: "In reality, chayote has been grown by the villagers for over a decade, but mainly on a small scale. Only in the last 2-3 years have many households boldly expanded the model. Recognizing the potential of chayote, the village Party branch has included the target of maintaining and expanding the area of chayote cultivation in its annual resolutions. To date, the entire village has 30 households cultivating 5 hectares of chayote on unproductive rice fields and hillside gardens."

The economic benefits of chayote cultivation are evident. Besides harvesting the fruit, some households also harvest chayote shoots for sale, creating a stable source of income for their families. On average, each hectare of chayote yields approximately 1 billion VND per year. This contributes to raising the average income of the village to about 60 million VND per person per year, and reducing the poverty rate to only 1.3%. In 2024, Hun village was recognized as a model new rural village in terms of rural culture. The Party branch and the Management Board of Hun village are continuing to encourage villagers to maintain and expand the area of chayote cultivation in a safe manner, linked to brand building and sustainable consumption, creating stable livelihoods.

Households in Hun village have invested in automatic irrigation systems for their chayote gardens.

Chayote cultivation has provided a stable income for the people of Hun village. However, for the model to develop sustainably, support from the government and relevant agencies is crucial in establishing cooperatives and production groups to link consumption; providing training in cultivation techniques, quality management, and promotion and branding. This will help Hun village's chayote establish a firm foothold in the market, becoming a stable and long-term economic development direction for the people.
