Chayote growing model in Hun village.

Arriving at the beginning of Hun village, we can see the lush green color of the chayote trellis covering the fields. In the garden of more than 2,000 m², Ms. Tong Thi Hoa's family is harvesting chayote hanging on a sturdy steel trellis. Ms. Hoa shared: The family invested 50 million VND to build the trellis and automatic irrigation system. Each year, they harvest about 25 tons of chayote, after deducting expenses, the profit is over 200 million VND.

And Mr. Tong Van Tien's family, one of the households that grows the most chayote in the village, with 5,000 m². Mr. Tien is excited: Chayote is easy to grow, requires little care, and gives continuous harvest. Every day, my family picks 1-3 quintals, with a stable selling price of 11-12 thousand VND/kg. Compared to other crops, growing chayote is much more economically efficient.

According to the growers of chayote in Hun village, chayote has low initial investment costs, and the harvest period lasts up to 9 months (from September to May of the following year). The entire production process is organic, the main fertilizer is composted manure, weeding is done manually or by small generators, and the irrigation system brings water from the mountain stream. Thanks to that, the chayote here retains its sweet quality, which is favored by consumers. Currently, chayote in Hun village is purchased by traders who come to the garden or by households who harvest and sell it at the night market in Chieng Coi ward.

Mr. Tong Van Yen, Deputy Secretary of the Party Cell, Head of Hun Village, shared: In fact, chayote has been grown by people for decades, but mainly on a small scale. In just the past 2-3 years, many households have boldly expanded the model. Realizing the potential of chayote, the Party Cell of the village has included the target of maintaining and expanding the area of chayote cultivation in the Party Cell's annual resolution. Up to now, the whole village has 30 households growing 5 hectares of chayote on ineffective rice fields and hill gardens.

The economic efficiency of growing chayote is very clear, because in addition to harvesting the fruit, some households also harvest chayote shoots to sell to the market, creating a stable source of income for their families. On average, each hectare of chayote brings in about 1 billion VND/year, from growing chayote, contributing to raising the average income of the village to about 60 million VND/person/year, the poverty rate has decreased to only 1.3%. In 2024, Hun village will be recognized as a model new rural village in terms of rural culture. The Party cell and the Management Board of Hun village are continuing to encourage people to maintain and expand the area of sucrose growing in a safe direction, associated with brand building and sustainable consumption, creating a stable livelihood.

Chayote trees have brought stable income to the people of Hun village. However, for the model to develop sustainably, it is necessary to have support from the government and relevant agencies in building cooperatives and cooperative groups to link consumption; training in care techniques, quality management as well as promoting and building brands, helping the Chayote trees of Hun village to affirm their firm position in the market, becoming a direction for stable and long-term economic development for the people.
