Opening new avenues for Hanoi's agricultural products.

In response to the demands of sustainable development and climate change adaptation, Hanoi is accelerating green transformation in agriculture through the application of high technology, organic production, circular economy, and digital transformation. This not only helps to increase the value of agricultural products but also opens up new directions for the capital's agriculture towards a modern, ecological, and highly competitive market.

High technology provides impetus for green agriculture .

In recent years, Hanoi's agriculture and environment sector has actively implemented numerous solutions to develop agriculture in a green, safe, and sustainable direction. From applying advanced production standards such as VietGAP, GlobalGAP, HACCP, and ISO to traceability management and smart farming applications, these efforts have contributed to improving the quality of agricultural products and meeting the increasingly high demands of consumers.

One exemplary model is the Dan Hoai Cooperative (Dan Phuong commune). To enhance the value of agricultural products, the cooperative has boldly invested in 85 greenhouses and net houses with a total area of approximately 20,000 m², while also applying advanced water-saving irrigation systems and temperature and light regulation technologies.

According to Bui Huong Bich, Director of Dan Hoai Cooperative, to enhance the competitiveness of agricultural products, the transition to green production and the application of technology are mandatory requirements. Thanks to systematic investment and the application of science and technology, the Cooperative has now mastered the process of planting, caring for, and mass-inducing flowering of high-quality Phalaenopsis orchids. Currently, the Dan Hoai Cooperative supplies the market with approximately 1 million seedlings and commercial Phalaenopsis orchids annually, achieving billions of dong in revenue.

Many localities are also developing models of agriculture combined with ecotourism to increase economic value on the same area of cultivated land. In Vinh Thanh commune, the model of organic grape cultivation combined with tourism experiences is becoming a popular destination attracting many tourists. According to Mr. Vu Van Luc, the owner of the model, with nearly 5 hectares of agricultural land, including more than 3 hectares planted with high-quality foreign grape varieties, the model not only aims to produce clean agricultural products but also creates an experiential space for tourists.

“Visitors can tour the vineyard for free, directly experience harvesting, and enjoy grapes when they register to purchase products such as grape smoothies, grape juice, or fresh grapes. In addition to grapes, we also grow strawberries and green vegetables to diversify our products and increase our appeal to visitors,” Mr. Vu Van Luc shared.

According to the Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Environment, the city now has 406 high-tech agricultural models. This is considered an important foundation for Hanoi to promote green transformation in the agricultural sector.

Towards low-emission, sustainable agriculture.

Green transformation in agriculture is not only a trend but also an essential requirement to enhance the competitiveness of Vietnamese agricultural products in the context of deep integration. Former Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment, Phung Duc Tien, stated: “Developing green value chains is an essential step in building a low-emission, low-harm agricultural sector, while optimizing economic benefits and improving the quality of life for farmers.” Along with this, digital transformation is being placed in a strategic position in the development of green agriculture. The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment is aiming to build a database on land, resources, greenhouse gas emissions, and natural disasters to serve smart production, helping farmers be more proactive in their farming practices.

The restructuring of crop patterns to suit soil and climate conditions, the reduction of chemical use, the increase of organic fertilizers, and the restoration of soil fertility are also being strongly implemented. This is considered a fundamental solution to move towards environmentally friendly agriculture, exploiting resources sustainably instead of maximizing them as in the past.

However, the development of green agriculture in Hanoi still faces many difficulties and challenges. One of the major bottlenecks currently is land planning and management. Many green agricultural models are still small-scale and not commensurate with their potential. In addition, accessing investment capital for high technology remains a difficult problem for many businesses, cooperatives, and individual producers. The investment costs for greenhouses, smart irrigation systems, or organic farming conversion are quite high, while the payback period is long.

To replicate the green transformation model in agriculture, Deputy Director of the Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Environment, Ta Van Tuong, stated that Hanoi will continue to organize agricultural production in a modern, green, clean, and ecological direction, gradually adapting to climate change. Accordingly, the city will focus on promoting the application of biotechnology, digital technology, IoT, and blockchain throughout the entire agricultural value chain, from production, harvesting, processing to consumption, in line with Resolution No. 57-NQ/TW of the Politburo on the development of science and technology, innovation, and national digital transformation.

In addition, Hanoi will expand models of rice cultivation with reduced emissions; production models meeting VietGAP, GlobalGAP, and organic standards; production models in greenhouses and net houses; application of water-saving irrigation technology; and development of biosafety in livestock farming. However, ministries and sectors need to continue improving the specific credit mechanisms for green agriculture and the circular economy; enhance the effectiveness of credit guarantee funds for small and medium-sized enterprises; and promote digital transformation and traceability to increase the value of agricultural products...

Thus, the green transformation is opening up a positive direction for Hanoi's agriculture. With the support of policies, science and technology, and the proactive efforts of the people and businesses, the capital's agriculture is not only aiming for growth but also for sustainable development, environmental friendliness, and competitiveness in both domestic and international markets.
