This is the third suspected death from rabies in Binh Thuan province since the beginning of 2025.
According to the epidemiological investigation of the Center for Disease Control of Binh Thuan province, on February 9, the patient (male, 36 years old) was resting when a stray cat weighing more than 1kg bit him on the left calf. The wound was shallow, with slight bleeding.
After being bitten, the patient did not go to a medical facility to treat the wound, did not get a rabies vaccine, and did not receive an injection of anti-rabies serum.
On April 3, the patient began to have symptoms of fatigue and abdominal pain but did not take any medication.
On the morning of April 4, his condition worsened with symptoms of fear of wind, difficulty breathing, convulsions... and his family took him to a private clinic. There, the test results and diagnosis showed suspected rabies.
The patient continued to have the above symptoms so his family took him to the Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Ho Chi Minh City. The patient's saliva sample tested positive for rabies by PCR. The family asked to take the patient home and he died on April 5.
In addition to the above patient, a stray cat (paralyzed in both hind legs) also bit Mr. HVP. He washed the wound with saline, received 3 doses of rabies vaccine, and 1 dose of tetanus vaccine.
Binh Thuan Province Center for Disease Control recommends that if a dog or cat bites, scratches or licks an open wound, people should immediately go to a medical facility for advice and rabies vaccination.
People absolutely do not treat with herbal medicine or apply folk methods that have no scientific basis.
