Jadon Sancho is surplus to requirements at Old Trafford. |
The Guardian assessed that coach Ruben Amorim's removal of these five players from the 2025/26 season plan and asking them not to participate in pre-season training caused a deadlock, damaging the club's reputation and finances.
Coach Amorim showed his toughness when announcing that Rashford, Sancho, Garnacho, Antony and Malacia were no longer in his plans and asked them to leave the team this summer. This led to pressure on the MU negotiating team, when contacting partners who wanted to own the 5 stars mentioned above.
These five players, with a combined wage bill estimated at more than £700,000 a week, include two of the four most expensive signings in United's history: Antony (£86m) and Sancho (£72m).
Rashford and Sancho, the two England internationals, are the highest earners, making it difficult to find new destinations due to their huge wages. Initially, Man United expected to earn around £160m from the sales of the above stars: £40m for Rashford, £25m for Sancho, £30m for Antony, £60-70m for Garnacho, plus £10m for Malacia.
However, developments in the summer transfer market in 2025 show that this desire of MU is unrealistic. Chelsea refused to buy Sancho outright, even willing to pay a £5 million fine instead of a £25 million fixed fee. Aston Villa did not activate the £40 million option to buy Rashford after failing to qualify for the Champions League.
Barcelona are interested in Rashford, but their tight finances mean they are looking for cheaper deals. Real Betis cannot afford to buy Antony outright, while Juventus have also pulled out of the Sancho deal due to financial difficulties.
With revenues down due to the absence of the Champions League next season and the risk of bankruptcy by Christmas 2025, as Ratcliffe warned, Man United are in real financial trouble. If they cannot sell the five players above, coach Amorim will find it difficult to add quality recruits this summer.
At the same time, the club may have to continue paying salaries for other teams to borrow players, as happened with Rashford at Aston Villa or Antony at Betis last season (Man United paid 25-50% of each player's salary).
