MU could potentially sign Mbeumo this summer. |
According to The Athletic , Manchester United are close to ending a decade-long drought for a striker to score 20 goals a season in the Premier League. The Red Devils have reached a personal agreement with Mbeumo and only need to meet the £65 million asking price.
Negotiations between Manchester United and Brentford are progressing. Manchester United have submitted two offers, totaling £55 million plus £7.5 million in add-ons, but these have been rejected. However, with Brentford demanding £65 million, the deal is likely to be finalized soon.
The key factor that made it easy for MU to complete the deal was Mbeumo's personal desire. The Cameroonian striker preferred a move to Old Trafford, despite manager Thomas Frank wanting to bring him to Tottenham.
For MU, this is a strategic signing. After spending £62.5 million on Matheus Cunha, adding a proven Premier League striker like Mbeumo would be the solution to their attacking problems.
Mbeumo's 20 goals last season were only surpassed by Mohamed Salah, Alexander Isak, and Erling Haaland. This is a milestone that no Manchester United player has reached since Robin van Persie helped Sir Alex Ferguson's side win the Premier League in the 2012/13 season.
If the deal goes through, it would shatter Brentford's record for player sales, surpassing the £40 million figure paid when the club let Ivan Toney join Al Ahli in the summer of 2024.
However, new manager Keith Andrews will face a mass exodus of talent. Captain Christian Norgaard is also on his way to joining Arsenal for £9.3 million.
