The gardens of ripe, red rambutans, laden with fruit, are impressive images for those who visit Binh Loc commune, Long Khanh town, Dong Nai from May to June of the lunar calendar.
About 90km from the center of Saigon, you can go by motorbike along National Highway 1A, or by bus on the highway. If you go by motorbike, you can enjoy the space on the road with many immense rubber forests when approaching Long Khanh town, but it takes about 2.5 hours. The highway shortens the time to only 1 hour. Around the end of May to July, coming to Long Khanh, visitors can not only freely admire and enjoy the immense ripe fruit gardens but will also be surprised by the hustle and bustle when the harvest season comes.
Long Khanh City (Dong Nai Province) is a land famous for its specialty fruits, including rambutan. Rambutan trees are grown in many localities in the Southeast region, but due to the characteristics of the fertile soil, Long Khanh rambutan is famous for its aromatic, sweet and crunchy flavor compared to other lands. Due to the characteristics of the soil, rambutan in Long Khanh is especially delicious, crunchy with many different varieties. Long Khanh rambutan includes 2 varieties: longan rambutan and Java rambutan. Based on some characteristics of fruit color, taste... people distinguish them. The peeled rambutan, large fruit, soft thorns, lots of flesh is the common rambutan grown and sold commonly, so the price is quite reasonable, suitable for many customers. Longan rambutan is a higher quality type, usually priced 3 times higher than Java rambutan because it tastes better, the flesh is crispy, and the sweetness is richer. These two rambutan varieties have differences in fruit quality and ecological characteristics. Longan rambutan is a difficult variety, especially during the flowering period. This is a difficult period to care for, requiring high techniques and experience from the people. In terms of external morphology, longan rambutan has oval leaves with pointed tips, while Java rambutan has oval leaves but the tips are not pointed. However, only experienced people can identify it.
Long Khanh rambutan has two main types: longan rambutan and peeled rambutan. From May to July every year is the main rambutan harvest season. Long Khanh longan rambutan has green, orange-yellow and red-yellow skin, small seeds, aromatic, crispy and sweet taste. Long Khanh peeled rambutan has red and dark red skin, long, thick beard and green spotted tail, sweet taste. These two Long Khanh rambutan products both have thin skin, thick flesh, contain many components of water, glucose, vitamins and minerals that are beneficial to health. Among many types of rambutan, only Long Khanh rambutan has just been protected by geographical indication. Being protected by geographical indication proves that Long Khanh rambutan has a reputation and affirms the special quality that rambutans from other regions cannot be similar to. According to this protection, rambutans from other places cannot be called "Long Khanh" rambutan. Rambutan originating from this area is commercially associated with the name Long Khanh, becoming a choice for consumers in the market. Building a brand will create a stable consumption market, helping farmers to cultivate their orchards better, contributing to improving the competitiveness of local specialty fruits. In 2016, the Department of Intellectual Property ( Ministry of Science and Technology ) granted a certificate of geographical indication registration for Long Khanh rambutan products. Long Khanh rambutan was also ranked by the Vietnam Record Organization in the top 50 most famous specialty fruits in Vietnam. The product is consumed in the domestic market and exported to China, Laos, Cambodia..., on many e-commerce platforms, as well as in supermarkets and traditional markets across the country.
