Sweet fruit picking season in Van Son

Việt NamViệt Nam24/12/2024

Mid-December, the main harvest season of Nam Son ancient tangerines in Van Son commune (Tan Lac). Gardeners in the commune "forget to eat, forget to sleep" to harvest, ensuring supply to traders who buy directly from the garden. In the 2024 crop, ancient tangerines continue to have "good harvest, good price", people are excited to prepare for a new spring full of abundance and warmth.

The ancient tangerine garden of Mr. Bui Van Tuan's family in Xom hamlet, Van Son commune (Tan Lac) is expected to yield high income in the 2024 crop year.

Along the road to Xom hamlet, there are many trucks with license plates from neighboring provinces coming to transport Nam Son ancient tangerines to wholesale markets for consumption. Because the citrus trees are grown along the hillsides, harvesting is a bit difficult for the people. People have to use motorbikes to increase the goods to gather at vacant lots, which are chosen to pack the goods in 10kg, 20kg foam boxes...

Mr. Luong Dinh Cuong, a trader at Long Bien market (Hanoi) said: "After more than 10 years of purchasing fruits in Hoa Binh , this is the first time I have come to the gardens in the Tan Lac highlands. Through tasting, it shows that citrus trees grown in this area have a cool, sweet flavor. Currently, the purchase price at the garden fluctuates around 24,000 VND/kg, slightly higher than orange and tangerine varieties in some neighboring localities. During the purchasing process, I also shared my experience so that gardeners can continue to improve the quality and design of their products. I hope that in the coming years, I will cooperate with the locality to consume citrus products of local people."

At the old tangerine garden of Mr. Bui Van Tuan's family in Xom hamlet, goods are also stacked waiting for traders to transport. More than 15 workers participate in the stages of harvesting, cleaning and packing. This crop year, the output of Mr. Tuan's citrus garden reached over 30 tons, the average price reached 35,000 VND/kg, the total revenue is estimated at nearly 1 billion VND. Traders buy directly from the garden from Hanoi and neighboring provinces. Mr. Tuan excitedly shared: "After more than 10 years of growing Nam Son old tangerines, I have accumulated and drawn many valuable lessons to develop the model. Currently, Nam Son old tangerines have established a foothold in the market and are known by many people for their beautiful appearance, thin peel, lots of water and characteristic aroma. In the coming time, the family plans to expand the area, continue to improve the quality and design of the products. At the same time, focus on designing professional packaging and packaging products that impress customers."

Through surveys at gardeners, this year Nam Son ancient tangerines are bearing fruit with beautiful appearance. The quality has also been improved after many years of experience in fertilization by local people. The area of citrus trees in Van Son commune is currently over 400 hectares, of which more than half is in the commercial period. Nam Son ancient tangerines include sweet tangerines, flat-wheel tangerines, etc. Along with that, many households are piloting planting V2 and Canh orange varieties, etc. to diversify product designs.

It is expected that in the 2024 crop, the total output of ancient tangerines in the area will reach over 1,000 tons. The price is stable at 30,000 - 35,000 VND/kg, at the beginning of the season it can reach 55,000 - 60,000 VND/kg. Compared to previous years, the consumption of Nam Son ancient tangerines is more favorable when inter-village and inter-hamlet roads have been invested in and built. This has created favorable conditions for traders to buy at the garden. In addition, people actively promote the product on social networking sites such as Facebook, Zalo, and YouTube so that more people know about it.

Comrade Ha Van Ha, Vice Chairman of Van Son Commune People's Committee affirmed: "Ancient tangerines are the main crop that helps people in the area gradually reduce poverty and improve the quality of life. According to statistics, the average income is currently estimated at 32 million VND/person/year, the poverty rate is 13.7%, down 4.5% compared to the same period last year. In the coming time, local authorities will encourage people to expand the area of citrus trees according to the general planning. Focus on applying scientific and technical advances in care to improve product quality and design. Establish a cooperative to strengthen the promotion, introduction, and linkage of goods consumption to ensure stable prices. From there, continue to build and develop the Nam Son ancient tangerine brand, contributing to promoting local socio-economic development.
