After heavy rains, the 5 sao of papaya trees that were being harvested of Mrs. Duong Thi Thao Le's family in Tay Hamlet, Long Phuoc Commune, Ba Ria City were broken in half and fell down in large numbers, with fallen fruits scattered all over the garden. Picking up each papaya on a wheelbarrow to feed the pigs, Mrs. Le said that this year the storms came early so the farmers did not have time to tie down the trees. "The papaya trees were about to be harvested but the rain broke them, almost completely lost, causing hundreds of millions of dong in damage," said Mrs. Le.
Not far away, the 2.5-hectare papaya garden of Mrs. Nguyen Thi Phan's family in Tay Hamlet was also 60% collapsed. The papayas that were ready to be picked and delivered to customers were crushed and bursting with sap, lying all over the garden. "Every year, the weather only rains and winds heavily at the end of June, but this year it's been so harsh. It's only the end of May but the continuous rain and thunderstorms have left fruit growers like us unable to react, causing heavy damage," Mrs. Phan shared.
