Garlic Harvest Season - Joy Not Complete

(Baoquangangai.vn)- These days, Ly Son farmers are urgently harvesting the winter-spring garlic crop. This year's garlic crop has a high yield, but the price of fresh garlic is still low, not as expected by the people, making the farmers' joy incomplete.

Farmers in Ly Son district are entering the winter-spring garlic harvest season of 2024 - 2025. This year, Ly Son farmers planted over 320 hectares of garlic.

According to farmers, this year the weather is favorable so garlic is a good crop.

On average, each sao of garlic yields 500 - 600 kg of fresh garlic. The total garlic output of Ly Son district is estimated at about 3,000 tons.

Although this year's garlic crop is good and the output is higher than previous years, the price of fresh garlic is still low. The current price of fresh garlic ranges from 35,000 to 40,000 VND/kg, while dried garlic costs from 70,000 to 80,000 VND/kg.

According to garlic growers, to make a profit, the price of fresh garlic must be at least 50 thousand VND/kg or more. Because the investment cost for each sao of garlic is up to nearly 20 million VND, including the cost of seeds, fertilizers and care.

Faced with low fresh garlic prices, many farmers have turned to drying and storing garlic, hoping that garlic prices will increase after the harvest.

"I dry them and wait for the price to go up before selling them, because selling them fresh is not enough to cover the labor and capital invested," said Ms. Pham Thi Tinh, a resident of Tay An Hai village (Ly Son).

One of the reasons why Ly Son garlic prices have fluctuated in recent years is the lack of linkage in production.

To solve the situation of "good harvest, low price" and "good price, bad harvest", building and developing a chain linking production and consumption plays a key role, helping to connect people with businesses. This not only ensures stability from input to output but also promotes Ly Son garlic to become a typical tourism product, thereby increasing sustainable income for the local community.
