The number of candidates taking separate exams is increasing.
This year, separate exams organized byuniversities to serve enrollment continued to attract the attention of candidates, clearly shown in the sharp increase in the number of candidates taking the exam compared to last year.
First of all, we must mention the competency assessment exam organized by Ho Chi Minh City National University. In the first round alone, there were over 126,000 candidates taking the exam, an increase of about 30,000 students compared to the first round last year. This exam is used to select candidates for more than 110 universities and colleges nationwide.

Similarly, the specialized competency assessment exam organized by Ho Chi Minh City University of Education this year is also used for admission to many other schools. Master Nguyen Ngoc Trung, Vice Principal of the school, said that the exam is now open for registration for the second round. Although the deadline has not yet passed, the number of candidates taking the exam has exceeded 20,000 (more than double the number for the whole year 2024). After the second round taking place at 4 locations (Ho Chi Minh City, Long An, Hue, Dak Lak ), this exam will be held in the third round in July, with an expected registration of about 7,000 candidates.
The computer-based university entrance assessment test (V-SAT exam) is also being held at many universities such as: Saigon University, Ho Chi Minh City Banking University, University of Finance - Marketing, Can Tho University... The results of this exam are also expanded to be used for admission to 18 different universities.
Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Van Thuy, Head of Admissions and Communications Department of Banking University of Ho Chi Minh City, said that this year the school will organize 5 rounds of exams. According to preliminary results, although only the first 2 rounds of exams have been held, the number of candidates taking the exam has increased by 200% compared to the whole year 2024. The school will continue to organize 3 rounds of exams in May and June.
Minimum admission score threshold
When announcing admission information, some universities have announced the expected scores for receiving applications for admission with the Ho Chi Minh City National University's 2025 aptitude test.
Based on the score distribution of the first round of the exam, admissions experts of some universities have proposed the expected score for receiving applications for the Ho Chi Minh City National University's competency assessment test. For example, the University of Economics and Law (Ho Chi Minh City National University) said that the expected quality assurance threshold is from 700 points, the National Economics University considers PhD admission from 700 points or more. Dr. Nguyen Trung Nhan, Head of Training Department of Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry, said that the score for receiving applications for majors at the main campus in Ho Chi Minh City is from 650 points and the Quang Ngai Branch is from 600 points.
Associate Professor, Dr. To Van Phuong, Head of Training Department of Nha Trang University, said that the minimum admission score will vary between majors and training programs. It is expected that the minimum admission score for majors in marine science and technology and fisheries, some engineering and manufacturing majors, will be around 600 points. For majors in economics, accounting, hotel management, and tourism, the minimum admission score is expected to be from 650 to 700 points. For special, high-quality training programs, the minimum admission score will be from 675 points or higher. "In addition to the competency test score, candidates applying for some majors of Nha Trang University also need to meet the English requirement score according to the school's regulations," Associate Professor Phuong added.
Similarly, Master Pham Thai Son, Director of the Admissions and Communications Center of Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade, also predicted that the minimum score for this test would be 600 points or higher. Last year, the school accepted applications from 700 points and the standard scores for each major also ranged from 600 to over 700. This year, the school increased its admission quota, so the standard score for this method is unlikely to change much.
Schools using the Ho Chi Minh City National University's competency test to recruit health and education majors also have their own regulations. For example, Buon Ma Thuot University of Medicine and Pharmacy uses the total score of the exam for admission, but candidates must meet the quality assurance threshold for each major. For example, for the two majors of medicine and pharmacy, candidates must have excellent academic performance in grade 12 or a graduation score of 8.0 or higher; and have a competency test result of 700 points or higher for medicine, 600 points or higher for pharmacy...
Some other separate exams also have a minimum score threshold to receive applications. For the specialized competency assessment exam, Master Nguyen Ngoc Trung said that candidates need to achieve 5 points/subject or higher to be eligible for admission to majors at Ho Chi Minh City University of Education.
Meanwhile, Vietnam-Germany University accepts applications with a TestAS written test score of 90 or higher (with no component test score below 90); and a computer-based test score of 75 or higher (with no component test score below 50).
This year, the number of candidates taking separate exams for university admission continues to increase sharply, doubling in some places.

How are points converted between schools?
This year, universities must convert the equivalent benchmark scores/admission scores between admission methods and combinations to a common scale. This requirement for equivalent benchmark score conversion not only ensures fairness for candidates but also serves as a basis for universities to review and adjust admission methods.
The method of converting equivalent benchmark scores from individual test scores is information that TS is currently particularly interested in.
However, up to now, many units said they are still waiting for more specific instructions from the Ministry of Education and Training. As planned, the University of Economics and Law will convert the admission scores, not the exam scores of each candidate. Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education plans to convert according to the formula of dividing the score of the competency assessment test by 40 to get a 30-point scale. Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade said it is carefully researching before coming up with a specific plan...
Previously, the University of Technology (Ho Chi Minh City National University) announced a comprehensive admission method with a separate score conversion method. Accordingly, the quality assurance threshold for this year's comprehensive admission method is 50 points (calculated on a scale of 100). Admission scores are calculated including academic performance points and priority points. In which, the school's academic performance points are based on the scores of the competency test, the high school graduation exam scores and the Ho Chi Minh City school report card scores. Depending on each candidate, the school has a separate formula for the group of candidates taking the competency assessment test, not taking the competency assessment test, graduating from high school abroad, using international admission certificates and applying for international transfer programs.
According to a representative of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, this year the school only has one admission method (in addition to direct admission). The school's scoring formula produces one score column, so there is no need to convert equivalent scores between admission methods or combinations.
Regarding the specialized competency assessment exam, Master Nguyen Ngoc Trung said that although this exam uses a 10-point scale, we still have to wait for the high school graduation exam scores to compare, from which we can have a suitable conversion formula if considered in general.
There are schools that consider competency assessment test scores from 850 points.
Some universities announced the minimum score for the Ho Chi Minh City National University's competency assessment exam results at a very high level, for example, Foreign Trade University considered from 850 points; Bac Lieu University also considered from 800 points for pedagogical majors. Next, some schools took the minimum score from 750 such as: Vietnam-Japan University (Hanoi National University), University of Management and Business (Hanoi National University). Some other schools accepted applications from 600 such as: Forestry University, Ton Duc Thang University, Hoa Sen University, Quang Nam University, Vinh Long University of Technical Education...
With the results of the competency assessment exam of Hanoi National University, Foreign Trade University accepts applications from level 100 (150-point scale), Banking Academy also accepts applications from level 85 points... Next, some schools accept applications from level 80 points such as: University of Commerce, Vietnam-Japan University, University of Management and Business (Hanoi National University), Phenikaa University (health sector except hospital management), Vinh University of Technical Education...
