Bustling on the salt fields
It was only 1 pm, although the sun was shining brightly, the salt fields in Ninh Diem ward (Ninh Hoa) were bustling with the laughter of salt workers harvesting salt. Each person had a job, some were raking the salt into piles, some were shoveling the salt onto carts, onto shoulder poles to transport the salt to the gathering place. Tidying up the pile of salt, Mr. Nguyen Anh Huy - who has 4 hectares of production in the salt fields of Phu Tho 1 Residential Group (Ninh Diem) happily said that thanks to favorable weather, salt sells for a high price, so most salt workers are making a profit at this time.

Sharing the joy, Mr. Ngo Dien - a member of the Ninh Diem 1.5 Salt Cooperative said that every year, salt farmers produce for about 7 months, the rest of the time it rains so they cannot produce. With 7 months of production, salt farmers can earn nearly 200 tons/ha. With the current selling price of 1,500 VND/kg, after deducting all expenses, 1ha of salt brings salt farmers an income of more than 100 million VND/year.
In the salt fields of Phu Tho 3 Residential Group (Ninh Diem), the bustling atmosphere and cheerful laughter seem to dispel the heat of the midday sun, somewhat easing the hardships of the salt workers. Wiping away the sweat rolling down his cheeks after a while of raking salt, Mr. Trinh Van Mach shared: "In the past 5 years, almost every year the salt workers here have not made a profit. Fortunately, this year the price of salt is good, so most of the salt workers have made a profit."
According to some salt farmers, salt production is profitable this year thanks to the high price of salt. Although productivity has not reached expectations, profits have increased significantly. Salt farmers have enjoyed the joy of salt.
Making salt on canvas for high quality products
There are many reasons for the high price of salt, mainly due to salt production on canvas (overcoming many limitations of previous ground salt). Mr. Nguyen Anh Huy has boldly applied machinery, equipment, and infrastructure renovation to invest in large-scale production of high-quality salt. Mr. Huy said that he has a total of 10 hectares of salt production, of which more than 2 hectares are covered with canvas. Each year, he harvests an average of nearly 2,000 tons of salt.
Similarly, at Ninh Diem Salt Cooperative 1.5, up to now, out of 92 hectares, more than 80 hectares have been converted by salt farmers to make salt on canvas. According to salt farmers, compared to making salt on the ground, salt on canvas has the advantage of crystallizing faster, the salt is cleaner and sells for a higher price, so it is more economically efficient.
Sharing about the difference between making salt on canvas and salt on the ground, Mr. Trinh Van Mach said that in the past, making salt on the ground was very hard, a salt making batch sometimes lasted a month with many stages, high risk while the yield was lower and the salt grains were worse, selling at a lower price. Since 2022, some salt farmers from abandoned salt fields have boldly invested in making salt on canvas, which has brought about efficiency. Up to now, most salt farmers are making salt on canvas. Since the beginning of the year, salt farmers have harvested more than 20 batches of salt.
According to the report of Ninh Hoa Town People's Committee, the total salt production area in the town is 720 hectares. By the end of May 2023, salt output reached about 26,800 tons , much higher than the same period last year (output in the first 6 months of 2022 only reached 19,300 tons).
