Participating in the training course, farmers in Binh Trinh Dong commune, Tan Tru district practiced right in the fields.
Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Long An - Dinh Thi Phuong Khanh informed: “From the beginning of 2023 to now, the Department has opened 15 vocational training classes for rural workers with over 450 students participating. Of which, 7 vocational training classes serve high-tech agricultural areas (HIA) with 210 students participating such as HIA white-leg shrimp farming, HIA vegetable growing, HIA rice growing; 8 regular vocational training classes with 240 students participating such as frog farming, straw mushroom growing, yellow apricot growing, water apricot growing, peanut growing, etc. The content of the vocational training classes revolves around farming techniques, focusing on increasing organic fertilizers, limiting chemical fertilizers, how to identify pests, diseases, pests, etc. ...".
Binh Trinh Dong Commune, Tan Tru District is one of the localities that does a good job of vocational training for rural workers. Every year, the commune coordinates with relevant units to open at least one vocational training class for rural workers. The Commune Farmers' Association conducts an investigation of the actual situation in the locality, then decides to open a class to avoid chasing after quantity and achievements.
Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Binh Trinh Dong Commune - Nguyen Van Thanh said: "The commune's agricultural land area is 610 hectares, mainly for rice cultivation. Through training courses, farmers know how to apply science and technology to rice cultivation such as selecting certified rice varieties, fertilizing, spraying pesticides at the right time,... From 2020 to now, on average, the commune opens 1 agricultural vocational training class every year, attracting many students to participate."
According to agricultural experts, farmers have long focused on output rather than product quality. This makes it difficult for the province's agricultural products to compete in demanding markets such as Japan, Korea, etc. Therefore, farmers need to change their production practices, focusing on quality rather than output.
Vice President of the Provincial Gardening Association - Engineer Nguyen Thanh Tung shared: “Currently, I participate in teaching agricultural training courses for farmers. Through that, I see that many farmers still produce in the traditional way. For example, rice must be very green, while too much green rice means over-fertilization, which is costly and the rice is susceptible to disease. Or farmers visit the fields but do not know how to visit the fields effectively, seeing the neighboring fields spraying pesticides and fertilizing, they follow suit. Therefore, farmers spend a lot of money but the productivity and quality of agricultural products do not meet market requirements.”
Identifying the problems and difficulties of farmers, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development is interested in opening short-term agricultural vocational training courses. This is the way the agricultural sector improves the quality of human resources to meet the needs of agricultural development in the future. We believe that with the efforts of all levels and sectors, farmers' awareness will increasingly increase, contributing to the rapid and sustainable development of the provincial agricultural sector in a modern and environmentally friendly direction./.
