Recruit flight attendants first, train later
Master Nguyen Minh Tung, Head of Admissions and Student Affairs Department of Vietnam Aviation Academy, said that there is currently no university or college training code specifically for flight attendant positions. Instead, flight attendants will be trained through short-term courses.

For example, the Vietnam Aviation Academy currently has a short-term flight attendant certificate training course, with a study duration of 4 months and tuition fees of over 60 million VND/person. This course is conducted by the Aviation Staff Training Center (under the Vietnam Aviation Academy) in collaboration with airlines in Vietnam. The training program is approved by the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam.
According to Master Tung, to take this course, students need to have specific entry standards regarding background, health, appearance, BMI (calculated based on height and weight data), foreign language... Based on the standards of airlines, the academy will coordinate to select profiles and check appearance before conducting training. Therefore, these courses ensure that students will have jobs.
However, according to Master Tung, after completing the course, Vietnam Aviation Academy will coordinate with airlines to conduct interviews and re-examine according to Joint Circular No. 18/2012 of the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Transport on aviation staff standards. If qualified, students will be accepted to work at airlines such as Bamboo Airways, Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet Air, etc.
In addition to Vietnam Aviation Academy, airlines often have their own training centers after recruitment.

Master Nguyen Minh Tung also said that this unit has college training in aviation commercial services, specializing in in-flight services. This program is 2.5 years with tuition fees of about 25 million/year. The school considers admission in 3 ways: academic records, high school exam scores, and priority admission.
According to Master Tung, after graduating from this major at the college level, students can work in many different positions related to aviation services. However, if they intend to become flight attendants, the school recommends that students applying for the aviation commercial services major must be at least 1m60 tall for women and at least 1m68 tall for men to meet job requirements after graduation.
"After graduation, students proactively apply to airlines to find jobs. To support students, the academy also cooperates with domestic and foreign airlines to introduce jobs," said Mr. Tung.
With this second direction, some other units are training in the field of aviation commercial services such as Nova College. Students are trained in basic knowledge of aviation, aviation security, cargo regulations, procedures for receiving and returning passengers, baggage, cargo and related documents in serving passengers, baggage and air cargo... Kent International College's aviation training center also has aviation staff training courses approved by the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, including basic flight attendant training.
What are the recruitment criteria?
Currently, airlines recruiting flight attendants often require a minimum educational level of high school graduation but give priority to those who have graduated from higher education.
For example, according to Vietnam Airlines ' 2023 flight attendant recruitment announcement, the airline has specific standards for candidates who are Vietnamese citizens. Specifically, the recruitment requirements for female flight attendants are from 20-28 years old, with a height of 1 m 58-1 m 75; male flight attendants are from 20-28 years old, with a height of 1 m 68-1 m 82. In particular, an appearance criterion is a minimum arm span of 2 m 12 when standing on tiptoe. Candidates must meet the health requirements of flight attendants, have a clear background, a balanced appearance, good communication skills, be confident, and be suitable for the service profession.
In addition, Vietnam Airlines' recruitment announcement clearly states that candidates must have graduated from high school or higher, with priority given to graduates from intermediate, college, or university. Regarding English requirements, candidates must have one of the following transcripts/certificates valid for 2 years from the exam date with a minimum score of: TOEIC Official Certificate (listening & reading) from 600 points; TOEIC Official Certificate (speaking & writing) from 250 points; TOEFL iBT from 71 points (TOEFL iBT at home is not accepted); TOEFL CBT from 197 points; IELTS from 5.5 points. Priority is given to candidates with a second foreign language certificate (Chinese, French, German, Russian, Japanese, Korean).
The recruitment process will include 3 rounds: assessment of appearance, communication, foreign language; interview with the Recruitment Council; health check and background verification.
Meanwhile, in 2022, Vietjet Air is recruiting flight attendants with a minimum height requirement of 1m60 for women (barefoot) and a BMI of 18.5-22; for men, a minimum height of 1m70 and a BMI of 20-24. The English proficiency requirement is a minimum TOEIC score of 500, but candidates who are 1-2 cm shorter than the standard can be considered if they achieve a TOEIC score of 600 or higher. In addition, candidates must be between the ages of 18-30, have a high school diploma or higher, have good communication and presentation skills, and be in good health to meet the requirements of flight attendants... In addition, the airline requires that candidates do not have tattoos or scars when wearing the Vietjet crew uniform and are not wearing braces.
