The US Department of Justice on September 23 released court records about suspect Ryan Routh, 58, who is currently in custody on charges of attempting to assassinate former President Donald Trump on September 15. The records reveal the content of a letter about an assassination plot against Mr. Trump. According to court records, a few months before the incident at the golf course, Routh wrote a letter threatening to assassinate Trump with the address "The World". In the letter, the subject expressed disappointment that the assassination attempt on Mr. Trump failed and promised to pay $ 150,000 to anyone who could complete this. It is unclear whether the failure mentioned in the letter was another plot or the incident that happened on the golf course and Routh anticipated the possibility of failure. Currently, Routh is in custody after an interrogation in West Palm Beach. The letter was among several found in a box of ammunition, metal pipes and construction materials that Routh had left at the home of an unidentified person. Routh was found on September 15 hiding near a Trump golf course with a rifle. A Secret Service agent opened fire on him after realizing the situation was dangerous. Ryan Routh was charged with possessing a gun with an obliterated serial number and unlawful possession of a weapon. Prosecutors said they want to charge Routh with “attempted murder” when the case goes before a grand jury. The maximum penalty for those charges is life in prison.
