US considers sending long-range ATACMS missiles to Ukraine

“That is still under discussion,” US President Joe Biden said, responding to a reporter's question about the possibility of providing the Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) to Ukraine.

The US is reportedly concerned about depleting its ATACMS missile stockpile and the potential for conflict escalation if Kiev uses the weapon to attack targets on Russian territory.

In early May, US National Security Council Press Secretary John Kirby said Washington had no plans to transfer ATACMS to Ukraine.

Earlier, the Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Mark Milley, said that the US would not provide Ukraine with TACMS. He said that the US had “relatively few” ATACMS systems and that the military needed to maintain significant levels of weapons in its stockpile.

The ATACMS missile can hit targets 300 km away and can be fired from launchers that have been supplied to Ukraine from the West, including the HIMARS mobile launcher and the M270 launcher.

Since Russia launched its military campaign in Ukraine, Western countries have supplied Kiev with various weapons systems, including anti-aircraft missiles, multiple rocket launchers, tanks, self-propelled artillery and anti-aircraft guns.

Ukraine has long asked its Western allies to provide it with long-range attack missiles that can hit Russian logistics areas far from the front line.

Recently, the UK decided to supply Ukraine with Storm Shadow missiles with a range of more than 250km. Storm Shadow missiles could become a weapon that helps Ukraine change the battlefield situation if viewed from its combat range.

London hopes that its lead in providing long-range weapons will make the US change its mind about ATACMS aid to Kiev, the Washington Post reported.
