According to CNN, on June 19, officials said the ship had enough oxygen for 70 to 96 hours after it went missing.

The Titanic expedition began with a 400-nautical-mile journey to the wreck site, about 1,500 kilometers off the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Officials said the submersible began its dive on the morning of June 18, but after 1 hour and 45 minutes, it lost contact with the crew of the Polar Prince, the support ship that transported the submersible to the site.

According to Rear Admiral John Mauger in a press conference on June 19, the US Coast Guard received an alert that the submersible was missing and they conducted a surface search, dispatching an aircraft to begin both an aerial and radar search.

The search involves aircraft, sonar buoys and ship-based sonar at sea to listen for any sounds that might indicate the submarine. The Canadian Armed Forces and the US Coast Guard have deployed aircraft to the area of the missing ship in the North Atlantic.

The US Coast Guard said its priority is to locate the ship.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Canadian Armed Forces said the force is deploying an aircraft to assist in the search for the missing submersible. “A Royal Canadian Air Force CC-130 Hercules is also preparing to join the search,” Len Hickey, senior public affairs officer for the Canadian Armed Forces, wrote in a statement.

The missing submersible, called Titan, is an 11.5-ton carbon fiber and titanium vessel, according to the expedition operator, OceanGate Expeditions. According to the OceanGate website, the 21-foot-long vessel is capable of supporting life for up to 96 hours.

Five people were on the missing submersible. Action Aviation businessman Hamish Harding was among the passengers on the expedition. Typically, a captain, a content specialist and three paying passengers join the expeditions. The eight-day expedition costs from $250,000. Mauger said the US Coast Guard is in the process of notifying the families of those on board.
