St Petersburg Police Chief Anthony Holloway said the boy was named Taylen Mosley. He was found dead in an amusement park.
While police were searching the area around Dell Holmes Park in St Petersburg, Florida's fifth most populous city, they discovered an alligator with something in its mouth.
Police shot the alligator, causing it to open its mouth and drop Taylen's body. "We didn't want to find him this way," Chief Holloway said, choking back tears.

Taylen had just celebrated her second birthday about 19 days before she was found dead. Taylen’s father, Thomas Mosley, 21, was charged with first-degree murder in the deaths of Pashun Jeffery, 20, and their son, Taylen, according to Sheriff Holloway.
Ms Jeffery was stabbed multiple times, leading to her death, while the cause of Taylen’s death is unclear. Ms Jeffery and her son were last seen at 5:30 p.m. on March 29.
Neighbors told police they heard loud noises coming from Jeffery’s apartment around 8:30 p.m. that night. Jeffery’s mother, Lakita Denson, contacted the apartment complex’s manager after not hearing from her daughter. Jeffery was later found dead and Taylen was missing.
Initially, police believed the boy had been “kidnapped.” The FBI and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement joined local authorities in searching for Taylen, using drones.
Family members said Jeffery and Taylen moved into the apartment complex in February of this year.
The investigation is ongoing.
