The Trump administration announced a new health policy on May 20, under which annual Covid-19 vaccine booster shots for healthy adults and children will no longer be routinely approved.
This move marks an important new policy change in the US in responding to acute respiratory infections caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
According to a VNA correspondent in Washington DC, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) officials have issued new requirements for annual Covid-19 booster shots, saying they will continue to apply a rational approach. The vaccine will only be given to higher-risk groups, including people 65 and older, as well as children and adults with at least one health problem.
In addition, the FDA is urging pharmaceutical companies to conduct large, long-term clinical studies before it can approve modified vaccines for healthy people.
FDA officials reassured those concerned about losing access to Covid-19 vaccines under the new requirement framework, saying the approach could still maintain annual booster vaccinations for about 100-200 million adults, according to a May 20 announcement in the New England Journal of Medicine.
The FDA's upcoming changes are raising questions about people who want to get a Covid-19 vaccine this fall but don't fall into one of the regulated groups.
According to experts, the only thing that can be confirmed right now is that the new FDA regulations will make the Covid-19 vaccine less likely to be insured and less available.
The new US requirements for Covid-19 vaccines have many similarities to the current approach of European countries, such as the UK, France and Germany, which limit booster shot recommendations to older adults and people with underlying health conditions.
