Yonhap cited data from flight tracking sites as saying the US Air Force RC-135V Rivet Joint surveillance aircraft flew over the city of Incheon, just west of Seoul, and neighboring Gangwon province as well as the east and west coasts of South Korea.
The RC-135V was deployed to South Korea three days after North Korea said it had tested an underwater nuclear weapons system, the Haeil-5-23, in waters between the Korean Peninsula and Japan in response to the latest joint military exercises by South Korea, the United States and Japan last week.
The South Korean and US navies, along with the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force, held a joint exercise from January 15-17 to improve the three countries' response capabilities to "threats from North Korea," according to Reuters. The US aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson participated in the exercise.

Yonhap quoted several sources as saying that the US deployment of advanced surveillance aircraft is part of regular intelligence gathering operations, but revealing the flight path of this type of aircraft could be intended to send a message to put pressure on North Korea.
This could be the third US surveillance flight to the area since the beginning of the year, following two previous flights on January 4 and 17.
South Korea accuses North Korea of using Ukraine as a "missile testing ground"
South Korea and the United States have stepped up surveillance for signs of possible "provocations by Pyongyang" after North Korean leader Kim Jong-un called for increased war readiness in the face of "unprecedented" US-led confrontation, according to Yonhap.
