US President Donald Trump and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent have hinted at the possibility of the administration taking steps to cool down the prices of coffee and bananas, among other food items heavily impacted by the president's tariff policies.
In an interview aired on Fox News on November 11, Trump said the administration would lower some tariffs on coffee.
Similarly, in another interview on Fox News, Bessent said the administration would make several important announcements in the coming days regarding items that the U.S. typically imports, including coffee, bananas, and other fruits.
These comments come as Trump attempts to allay concerns about inflation and the burden of the cost of living.
In recent days, Mr. Trump has also mentioned the possibility of paying a "dividend" from the tariffs to many Americans. He recently acknowledged that American consumers are bearing some of the cost of his tariff policies. Currently, most of these tariffs are awaiting a ruling from the Supreme Court.
President Trump relied on the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to implement his tariff policy, becoming the first president in history to do so. Lower federal courts had previously ruled that President Trump lacked the legal authority under the IEEPA to impose so-called “reciprocal tariffs” on imports from many of America’s trading partners, as well as the special fentanyl-related tariffs on Canada, China, and Mexico.
At the Supreme Court, the justices expressed skepticism about the legality of the heavy tariffs that President Donald Trump imposed on most countries around the world . They questioned whether the IEEPA truly granted President Trump the authority to impose tariffs, or whether this constituted interference with the authority of Congress. The U.S. Constitution grants Congress the power to enact taxes and tariffs.
Observers predict that if the Supreme Court rules against Trump, his administration will seek alternative means to continue pursuing its trade agenda.
