The sanctions come after months of South Sudan refusing to cooperate in accepting immigrants deported by the US.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stressed: "South Sudan has violated the basic principles of international law by refusing to allow its citizens to return home. We are forced to apply strong measures to protect sovereignty and border security."
Mr. Marco Rubio informed about the incident on social network X.
The decision, effective immediately, affects thousands of South Sudanese living, working and studying in the United States.
The move is part of the Trump administration's hardline immigration policy, which has always promoted the "America First" principle. The US has repeatedly warned that it will impose sanctions on countries that do not cooperate in repatriating their citizens, including tariffs or visa restrictions.
The situation is further complicated by the risk of a renewed civil war in South Sudan. Political tensions have escalated after Vice President Riek Machar, a former rebel leader in the 2013-2018 civil war, was placed under house arrest on charges of plotting to incite violence. The African Union (AU) has had to send a peace delegation to the capital Juba in an effort to prevent conflict.
According to experts, the US decision could worsen the humanitarian crisis in South Sudan - the world's youngest country but always plagued by poverty and conflict. An estimated 2,000 South Sudanese are awaiting deportation from the US, many of them war refugees.
