The US government has confirmed that workers from South Korean companies can now use B-1 visas to enter the country to perform installation, maintenance, and repair work for investment projects. The relaxation comes after hundreds of South Korean workers were arrested at a Hyundai-LG battery plant in Georgia for using B-1 visas.
The two governments have set up a joint working group and held its first meeting on September 30 to agree on the scope of activities allowed. The US also pledged to open an investor support unit at its embassy in Seoul this month.
The regulation is expected to remove entry difficulties, helping Korean businesses maintain the progress of projects in the US.
By law, to do manual labor work in the US, workers are required to have a work visa. However, under the administration of President Donald Trump, obtaining this type of visa has become more difficult, forcing companies to find alternative solutions. One of those solutions is the US ESTA visa waiver program. This program allows citizens from dozens of countries to be approved to enter the country online without having to apply for a formal visa at the embassy.
