The White House reiterated President Donald Trump's position on April 12 that the United States cannot rely on China in key technology areas such as semiconductors, chips, smartphones, and laptops.
White House spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt emphasized that President Trump had secured trillions of dollars in investment in the U.S. from tech giants like Apple and Nvidia.
She revealed: "Following the President's directive, these companies are working to bring manufacturing back to the United States as soon as possible."
The statement was made shortly after the US government decided to exempt smartphones, computers, and other electronic devices from reciprocal tariffs.
In addition, semiconductors are also exempt from the 10% "base" tariff applied to most of America's current trading partners.
This move is seen as a step by the Trump administration to mitigate the cost impact of tariffs on many popular high-tech products for American consumers.
