The White House on April 12 affirmed US President Donald Trump's stance that the country cannot depend on China in key technology areas such as semiconductors, chips, smartphones and laptops.
White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt stressed that President Trump has secured trillions of dollars in investment in the US from “tech giants” such as Apple and Nvidia.
“At the direction of the President, these companies are working to bring manufacturing back to the United States as soon as possible,” she revealed.
The statement was made shortly after the US government decided to exempt reciprocal tariffs on smartphones, computers and other electronic devices.
Semiconductors are also excluded from the 10% “base” tariff currently applied to most of America’s trading partners.
The move is considered a step by the Trump administration to reduce the cost impact of tariffs on American consumers related to many popular high-tech products./.
