According to Reuters, the US will temporarily suspend issuing permits for new liquefied natural gas (LNG) export facilities to assess the impact of these projects on climate change, the economy , and national security.
Accordingly, LNG export projects to countries that do not have free trade agreements (FTAs) with the United States will be suspended until the Department of Energy updates its assessment of the projects' economic and environmental impacts.
The U.S. is currently the world's leading LNG exporter, with exports projected to double by 2030. It currently has seven export-oriented LNG facilities and five more approved and under construction. Additionally, 17 projects are awaiting approval. Government officials have pledged that the suspension will not harm allies under national security waivers should those countries require additional LNG.
