The US will temporarily suspend licensing new liquefied natural gas (LNG) export facilities to assess the impact of these projects on climate change, the economy and national security, according to Reuters.
Accordingly, LNG export projects to countries that do not have a free trade agreement (FTA) with the US will be suspended until the Ministry of Energy updates its assessment of the economic and environmental impacts of the projects.
The United States is currently the world's leading LNG exporter, with exports expected to double by 2030, with seven LNG export facilities and five approved or under construction. Another 17 projects are seeking permits. Government officials have pledged that the pause will not harm allies under national security exemptions if they need more LNG.
