The US is considering issuing a $250 bill.

According to the Vietnam News Agency correspondent in Washington, the administration of President Donald Trump is reportedly considering a plan to issue a commemorative $250 banknote to mark the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States' founding.

US media reported that several high-ranking officials in the administration had urged the Bureau of Engraving and Printing of Currency under the US Treasury Department to study the design of new banknotes, including the option of using an image of Mr. Trump.

The U.S. Treasury Department has confirmed it is preparing steps toward potentially issuing a commemorative $250 bill. A department spokesperson said the preparations are underway to meet the requirements of a congressional bill sponsored by Representative Joe Wilson (Republican, South Carolina).

According to the Washington Post, internally circulated design drafts show President Trump's image centrally positioned on the banknote, along with his signature and that of Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. If implemented, this would be the first time since 1866 that the image of a living person has appeared on U.S. paper currency.

However, the plan currently faces several legal hurdles. According to the Thayer Amendment, passed in 1866, images of living people are not permitted on currency, treasury bills, or other official U.S. government financial documents. Furthermore, current federal law only allows the issuance of certain denominations of paper currency, and the $250 note is not currently on the approved list.

Meanwhile, Patricia Solimene, former head of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, reportedly opposed the plan and warned that the agency lacked sufficient legal basis to implement it. According to some sources, Solimene argued that the process of issuing a new banknote design typically takes 6-8 years, especially for a high denomination never before in circulation like the $250 note.

Recently, many Democratic lawmakers have introduced bills aimed at preventing President Trump's image from appearing on U.S. banknotes.
