On the morning of June 2, at the University of Technology, Vietnam National University, Hanoi , the closing ceremony and award ceremony of the first National Artificial Intelligence Olympiad for students (VOAI) took place.
The competition was launched in April 2025 with nearly 150 high school students nationwide meeting AI competency standards participating in the preliminary round.
Through the preliminary round results on May 11, 99 excellent candidates from 28 high schools in 17 provinces/cities, 4 specialized high schools belonging to universities across the country were selected for the final round.
On June 1, 98 contestants gathered in Hanoi to compete in the VOAI 2025 final round at the University of Technology, Vietnam National University, Hanoi.
The final round is an individual, 6-hour practical exam with 2 tests, including computer vision and natural language processing using machine learning models according to the IOAI 2025 practical exam content guidelines.
The test is automatically graded according to international standards on the integrated VNOJ submission system, with strict security and transparent results.
After intense competition, the organizers awarded 34 consolation prizes, 25 third prizes, 17 second prizes, and 7 first prizes. The championship went to Nguyen Phu Nhan, an 11th grade student at Le Quy Don High School for the Gifted, Da Nang.
Notably, among the 34 contestants who won consolation prizes, most of whom were students in grades 10, 11, and 12, there was a special contestant, Le Ky Nam, a 7th grade student at Newton Secondary and High School.
The two second prize winners, Vu Dinh Bao Vinh and Tran Thuan Hieu (Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted), will join the champion and seven first prize winners in the selection round of the Ministry of Education and Training to find eight candidates to represent Vietnam at the AI Olympiad in Beijing, China, taking place from August 2 to August 9.
At the award ceremony, Mr. Le My Phong - Deputy Director of the Department of Quality Management, Ministry of Education and Training - assessed the contest as a new model, not only with the participation of candidates in big cities, but also students in remote areas, from An Giang and Lao Cai.
For the contestants who won the highest prizes, he said they had an even greater mission - to bring the Vietnamese flag to international competitions in the future. He hoped that teachers and students would win the highest prizes in this competition to continue Vietnam's achievements at previous Olympic Games.
The top 10 excellent students of the competition will be selected by the Ministry of Education and Training to have 8 representatives to compete in the International Artificial Intelligence Olympiad.
According to the organizers, most of the students who registered to participate in the contest won high prizes in national and provincial competitions for excellent students in informatics, the contestants won prizes and participated in national and provincial artificial intelligence competitions, and some students achieved high results in science and technology innovation competitions at all levels.
Previously in the preliminary round, to ensure transparency, the organizers did not use AI support over the Internet.
The preliminary round is organized in the form of a multiple-choice test with 8 exam codes, 100 multiple-choice questions, focusing on three areas: machine learning, computer vision and natural language processing (NLP), built on the international IOAI program.
