High quality rice accounts for 76.7%

Chairman of the Board of Directors of Kim Bai Agricultural Cooperative (Thanh Oai Commune) Nguyen Dinh Lam said that in the last spring crop, the cooperative cultivated about 35 hectares of high-quality Japonica rice, with an expected yield of 6.5 tons/ha, nearly double that of previous rice varieties. Not only giving high yields, high-quality rice varieties produced according to the VietGAP model also sell for 8-10% higher than other rice varieties and also reduce production costs. Mr. Luu Ba Tiep in Yen Lang Commune also shared that in the 2025 spring crop, his family planted about 3 sao of rice, of which high-quality rice varieties accounted for 70%. In general, high-quality rice varieties bring high economic efficiency: J02 variety has a yield of 6.7 tons/ha/crop; Bac Thom rice variety, TBR225 has a yield of 6.5 tons/ha/crop. Through monitoring, rice is less susceptible to pests and diseases, reduces costs, and increases production value by about 20-30 million VND/ha/year compared to normal rice...

Assessing the effectiveness of introducing high-quality rice varieties into production, Deputy Director of the Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Environment Nguyen Manh Phuong said that currently, the structure of high-quality rice varieties, glutinous rice and high-yield purebred rice varieties in the city continues to expand the production area with 200 growing areas. In the spring crop of 2025, the whole city planted nearly 80,000 hectares of rice. The group of quality rice varieties, glutinous rice reached 61,081 hectares, accounting for 76.7% of the cultivated area (an increase of 3,868.7 hectares compared to the spring crop of 2024). The main varieties are TBR225, J02, Bac Thom 7, HD11... In particular, the communes of Ung Hoa district (old) have a rate of using high-quality rice varieties of 91.1%, of which J02 accounts for 88% of the area, an increase of 667.1 hectares compared to the same period in 2024; The communes of Phuc Tho district (old) have a high-quality seed usage rate of over 90%, mainly Huong Tho rice variety No. 1.

Hanoi is implementing the crop season, continuing to introduce high-quality rice varieties into production. In fact, the model of producing high-quality rice in the direction of safety, VietGAP... contributes to promoting the production movement, forming commercial rice production areas. Along with that, raising awareness and responsibility for officials and farmers about the efficiency of land use, reducing the use of chemical fertilizers and chemicals in agricultural production. At the same time, changing people's old farming habits to preserve natural enemies, balance the ecosystem, sustainable agricultural production, contributing to preserving and protecting land, water and environmental resources... In addition, thanks to introducing high-quality rice varieties into production, Hanoi has built and maintained 4 production - consumption chains of rice products, 3 collective rice brands. Thereby affirming the brand and quality of products in the market, helping to develop sustainable production and consumption of products...

Expanding production links along the chain

To expand the production area and introduce high-quality rice varieties into production, Director of the Doan Ket Agricultural Production and Business Cooperative (Van Dinh Commune) Cao Thi Thuy suggested that functional sectors should promote extensive propaganda about the effectiveness of using new varieties with potential for productivity, quality, and resistance to pests and diseases...; at the same time, build many models of using new varieties and good quality varieties; guide farmers to produce rice according to advanced processes such as: SRI, apply balanced synthetic and organic fertilizers, use biological and less toxic pesticides according to the "4 rights" principle (right medicine, right time, right way and right dose) to improve productivity and product quality. On the other hand, there should be policies to encourage businesses to invest in building rice processing factories in localities; link production and purchase products for farmers during the harvest season...

In 2025, Hanoi will focus on developing the production of Japonica rice and high-quality rice according to export standards. Accordingly, the structure of high-quality rice varieties in the whole city will reach more than 80% of the cultivated area; form and develop 3-5 areas for producing herbal rice as functional foods; promote the development of post-harvest technology (drying, processing, preserving rice) to increase the value of rice products; build 3-5 more domestic and export chains to expand the market for consuming high-quality rice products, creating a premise for sustainable production.

Regarding this issue, Deputy Director of the Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Environment Nguyen Manh Phuong said that the Department continues to coordinate with localities to reorganize production, train and improve capacity for households, cooperatives, cooperatives, and enterprises; invest in upgrading infrastructure in specialized rice growing areas; apply science and technology, and digital transformation in the agricultural sector.

To ensure food security, Hanoi maintains stable rice growing areas, promotes the conversion of drought-prone areas, areas with insufficient irrigation water sources and ineffective rice growing land to other crops; promotes trade promotion activities, links production and rice consumption, thereby enhancing the value chain, sustainably developing the rice industry, improving production and business efficiency, protecting the environment, and adapting to climate change...
