Improving the efficiency of forest development

Recognizing forestry as a key economic sector, localities in the province are actively implementing reforestation programs according to the correct seasonal schedule, focusing on solutions to adapt to climate change in order to improve efficiency.

The first-year planted forest of Bac Kan Forestry One-Member Limited Company is developing well.

Prior to the merger, the former Bac Kan province planned to plant 3,500 hectares of forest with a main tree species including acacia, pine, cinnamon, star anise, pine, and mahogany; Thai Nguyen province planned 3,500 hectares with acacia as the main species (accounting for 60-70%), the rest being pine, cinnamon, and some other tree species.

Following the merger, the area for new forest planting in this region is assessed to have significant potential for expansion. Thanks to effective communication and mobilization efforts encouraging businesses and individuals to adhere to planting schedules, by the end of June, Thai Nguyen province had completed over 80% of its new forest planting plan. This rate is expected to continue to increase due to favorable weather conditions for planting and caring for forest trees.

This year, Bac Kan Forestry One-Member Limited Company plans to plant 562 hectares of concentrated forest. To date, the company has completed 150 hectares. The main tree species planted remain familiar ones such as acacia and pine, suitable for the climate, soil conditions, and market demand. The remaining area is being urgently cleared of undergrowth, holes are being dug, and planting will continue under suitable weather conditions.

Mr. Vu Dinh Vinh, Head of the Forest Management and Protection Technical Department of the Company, said: The entire area of forest planted this year is under contract with three businesses, including: Ba Be Agriculture and Tourism Joint Stock Company; Bac Kan Forestry Investment and Processing Joint Stock Company; and Vina Wood Forestry Company Limited.

The units are committed to ensuring seed quality, technical procedures, and guaranteed purchase of the output. During the implementation process, the company regularly inspects and monitors the quality of the crops, and so far, most areas are growing well. Businesses have promptly supplemented and replanted dead plants due to weather effects, especially the recent prolonged heatwaves, Mr. Vinh said.

Signing a partnership agreement between state-owned and private enterprises will bring long-term benefits, helping to enhance the responsibility of both parties in the process of planting, caring for, and harvesting forests. At the same time, this model aims to create concentrated, high-quality raw material areas that qualify for sustainable forest certification (FSC), thereby increasing value in production, processing, and export.

Mr. Vu Dinh Vinh further emphasized: To plant forests effectively, the first thing is to properly control the quality of seedlings. Seedlings must have a clear origin and meet standards. Planting must be done at the right time. Acacia and pine trees should be planted from January to June; trees such as cinnamon, star anise, and pine can be planted until August. In addition, it is necessary to strictly adhere to technical procedures from clearing the undergrowth, digging holes at the correct distances, to caring for the trees, fertilizing, and controlling pests and diseases.

In reality, reforestation efforts in the area have also faced numerous difficulties. This year, according to local residents, the prolonged hot and dry weather in March and April caused many planted areas to wither and die, especially those on high hills that depend heavily on rainwater.

Many households have had to buy seedlings and replant them multiple times. Another difficulty is that the supply of seedlings this year is quite scarce, and the price is much higher than in previous years. Many households have had to go to other provinces to buy seedlings to supplement their planting.

Mr. Vu Ngoc Tu, from Hamlet Six Two, Thanh Thinh Commune, is replanting acacia trees for the second time because many trees had withered and died due to drought.

Mr. Vu Ngoc Tu, from Hamlet Six Two, Thanh Thinh Commune, is replanting acacia trees for the second time because many of them had withered and died previously.

Mr. Vu Ngoc Tu, from Hamlet 62, Thanh Thinh Commune, said: "I planted about 1 hectare of acacia trees, but due to the drought, many trees died. My hill lost up to 60% of the seedlings, equivalent to 600 trees. Now I have to replant them for the second time. Moreover, the price of seedlings this season is twice as expensive as last year. Not only me, but many forest-planting households are in a similar situation."

In the context of increasingly unpredictable weather patterns, reforestation requires careful planning and flexible adaptation to climatic conditions. Proactively monitoring weather forecasts, selecting appropriate planting times, and prioritizing cool, rainy days have become crucial principles, contributing to minimizing risks and enhancing the effectiveness of reforestation investments.

In parallel, the role of relevant authorities in inspecting the quality of seedlings and stabilizing market prices is also crucial, helping people feel secure in their production and maintain a long-term commitment to forestry.
