Renewable Energy - the Path to a Sustainable Future for Vietnam

Báo Kinh tế và Đô thịBáo Kinh tế và Đô thị01/03/2025

Important steps to reduce negative impact on the environment

Renewable energy brings many benefits not only in the short term but also in the long term for the environment, the economy and human life. Currently, climate change has become one of the biggest challenges facing humanity. Switching from traditional energy sources such as coal and oil to renewable energy sources is an important step in minimizing negative impacts on the environment and public health.

Renewable energy helps Vietnam reduce its dependence on fossil energy sources, ensuring a stable and sustainable energy supply for production. In particular, the use of renewable energy helps businesses demonstrate social responsibility, improve their image and reputation in the eyes of customers and partners. This is a trend that is being encouraged in many localities in our country through models of conversion to green buildings.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 92% of the population is living in polluted air and Vietnam is one of the countries at a high level of alarm. In particular, fine dust and ultra-fine dust are identified as one of the factors that greatly affect human health.

According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, fine dust or PM (Particulate Matter) is often primarily sourced from vehicle exhaust or through the burning of organic fuels in industry.

Regarding this issue, Dr. Nguyen Huy Hoang, High Pressure Oxygen Center of Vietnam - Russia Tropical Center, Ministry of National Defense said that regular exposure to fine dust can cause respiratory problems, cardiovascular problems, blood pressure, poisoning, immune deficiency...

Giving recommendations, Dr. Nguyen Huy Hoang said that everyone needs to join hands through awareness of environmental sanitation from small things such as not littering, limiting the use of motorbikes and personal cars, prioritizing public transport, using clean fuel, not dumping and burning garbage, cleaning houses, neighborhoods, offices, planting more trees... And renewable energy is the optimal solution to reduce the impact on the environment as well as contribute to protecting human health.

One of the most obvious and visible benefits of the energy transition is the reduction of air pollution. In fact, fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas emit pollutants such as CO2, SO2 and fine particulate matter when burned. These substances not only pollute the air but also cause serious health problems for humans.

By switching to solar and wind energy, reducing or eliminating these sources of pollution would improve air quality, which would have significant public health benefits, contributing to increased life expectancy and improved health outcomes. Reducing air pollution would also reduce the financial burden on the health system.

Improving quality of life, towards a sustainable future

One of the long-term benefits of the energy transition is that it will help slow climate change. Reducing CO2 emissions from burning fossil fuels will slow global warming. CO2 and other greenhouse gases cause the greenhouse effect, which increases the Earth's temperature and leads to extreme weather events such as storms, floods, and droughts, affecting ecosystems and human communities.

As countries transition to renewable energy, CO2 emissions into the atmosphere will drop dramatically, thereby minimizing the negative impacts of climate change. This not only protects the environment but also protects public health, as natural disasters caused by climate change can cause great loss of life and property.

Using clean energy not only reduces air pollution but also improves the quality of life for future generations. These changes could include a reduction in air pollution-related diseases such as lung cancer, cardiovascular disease and respiratory problems. Health systems would no longer have to deal with large numbers of patients suffering from pollution-related diseases, saving resources and improving the quality of health care.

Furthermore, the energy transition reduces dependence on scarce natural resources, thereby creating a more sustainable economy, reducing negative impacts on public health.

In our country, it can be affirmed that renewable energy plays an important role for employers, bringing many practical benefits. Notably, it helps improve working conditions, minimize health risks for workers, thereby increasing labor productivity.

Specifically, in terms of the environment, it protects against pollution sources and prevents depletion of natural resources. In terms of life, the most obvious benefit is protecting people's health and creating opportunities for disadvantaged people to access modern, cost-saving energy models.

Thus, renewable energy solutions are the “key” to a sustainable future, not only beneficial for the environment but also bringing many health benefits to people. In the short term, this process helps reduce air pollution, reduce medical costs and improve the quality of life. In the long term, it contributes to reducing climate change, protecting public health and creating a green economy. Therefore, investing in energy transition is an optimal solution to ensure sustainable development for both the environment and people in the future.
