Widespread heatwave leads to record-breaking electricity consumption.

According to information from NSMO, the peak power of the entire national power system (Pmax) reached 52,487 MW at 4:10 PM, setting a new operating record for 2026, equivalent to 95.5% of the peak level of 2025; of which, the peak power in the North reached 24,893 MW, while the South reached 23,261 MW – the highest level since the beginning of the year and exceeding the previous year's record by 4.6%.

Along with increased capacity, nationwide electricity consumption also rose sharply, reaching 1.103 billion kWh, setting a new record for 2026 and equivalent to 99.2% of the peak level in 2025.

By region, the North consumed approximately 510 million kWh, accounting for 46.2% of the total system output; the Central region reached 107 million kWh, accounting for 9.7%; while the South reached 486 million kWh, corresponding to 44.1%. Notably, both the Central and Southern regions recorded record high electricity consumption levels in 2026, reaching 93.1% and 106.9% respectively compared to the peak levels of 2025.

In the power generation structure, coal-fired thermal power continues to play a leading role with an output of 588.6 million kWh, accounting for 53.4% of the total power generation of the entire system. Hydropower ranks second with 286.7 million kWh, equivalent to 26%.

Gas turbine power contributed 90.2 million kWh, accounting for 8.2%; of which, the Southeast Vietnam gas system was utilized to its maximum capacity with a consumption of approximately 10 million m3/day. Southwest Vietnam gas reached 3.6 million m3, while LNG reached 3.25 million m3.

Renewable energy sources continue to be exploited at a high level. Solar power reached 53.4 million kWh, with rooftop solar power estimated at approximately 43.9 million kWh, accounting for nearly 9% of the total system output. Wind power contributed 20.2 million kWh, while biomass power reached 4.7 million kWh.

According to NSMO, record-breaking operational milestones were predicted before the April 30th - May 1st holiday, when electricity demand enters a period of sharp increase at the beginning of the dry season. Despite the high load, the national power system remained safe and stable; power sources were optimally mobilized, ensuring continuous electricity supply for production and daily life. System voltage and equipment load levels were both within permissible operating limits.

The power system operator also stated that from May 25-30, Hanoi , the Northern Delta, and North Central regions have a high probability of experiencing a severe heatwave with temperatures exceeding 37 degrees Celsius. With the peak of the dry season approaching, NSMO recommends that people and businesses increase their use of electricity efficiently and economically; and promote the exploitation of rooftop solar power in accordance with Prime Minister's Directive No. 10/CT-TTg on strengthening electricity saving and developing rooftop solar power, in order to contribute to reducing pressure on the national power system.
