The record-breaking heatwave in the UK is forecast to end this weekend, as temperatures drop across much of the region and the weather turns cloudy with rain, according to the UK Met Office.
On May 30, 2026, hot weather will persist in some areas, particularly in the southeastern part of England. According to the Met Office, temperatures in London could reach 30 degrees Celsius in the afternoon, while Cambridge will be around 29 degrees Celsius and Reading around 28 degrees Celsius.
Scotland and Northern Ireland are likely to have cloudy skies on May 30th, with showers expected in the late afternoon. Meanwhile, England and Wales are forecast to be drier, with sunshine and some warm spells.
From May 31st, a cooler air mass from the Atlantic will move in from the west, bringing clouds and showers, causing the highest temperatures to drop below 20 degrees Celsius. This change will also make the weather more unstable as the meteorological summer season begins on June 1st.

Greg Dewhurst, a meteorologist at the Met Office, said next week will mark a change from the heatwave, with temperatures returning to near-average levels for this time of year. He said rain may be needed for gardeners, growers, and farmers, given the very dry ground.
The Met Office forecasts heavy showers, possibly accompanied by thunderstorms, on June 2nd. From June 3rd through the weekend, low-pressure systems will continue to move in from the Atlantic, bringing more rain, while southern and eastern England are likely to be drier.
According to Mr. Dewhurst, warmer weather could return in mid- or late June, after a volatile start to the month.
The recent heatwave caused temperatures in many areas of the United Kingdom to exceed 30 degrees Celsius. On May 26th, England and Wales recorded their hottest May days on record, with temperatures at Kew Gardens, West London, reaching 35.1 degrees Celsius, and Bute Park in Cardiff reaching 32.9 degrees Celsius.
