On May 25, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg declared that he did not welcome the idea of a single European Union (EU) army.
While welcoming the EU's defense efforts as the bloc increases defense spending, Stoltenberg affirmed that the EU cannot replace NATO. According to Stoltenberg, if NATO member states establish alternative command structures, they are very likely to replicate NATO's functions. At the end of March, EU High Representative for Security and Foreign Policy Josep Borrell also stated that the idea of the 27 EU member states disbanding their armies to form a common army is impractical.
Earlier, on March 5, the European Commission put forward a legislative proposal for an EU defense industry strategy, including increased arms production and closer cooperation among member states. Meanwhile, in February, Russian President Vladimir Putin asserted that Moscow had no intention of attacking any NATO member state, while emphasizing that NATO countries were trying to intimidate their citizens with imaginary threats against Russia.
